  2. Must say I'm a little suprised. I think in the end they will just switch the Weaver boys once Colon comes back. On a side note....I think there is a good chance Abe Alvarez gets the start on 6/6 @NY. He starts tonight then his next start comes on 6/6. Too bad Hansen and Lester's starts come the next two days after.
  3. Pauley also threw that nice sinking fastball and got a bunch of double plays. Deffinitly a nice advantage to keep the ball on the ground with our infield. Matt Clement can't keep anything in the park.
  4. I saw Zumaya pitch against the Yanks the other night. Certainly he looks good knocking out 4 in a couple innings. He deffinitly has some heat but at the same time his control is not the same as Papelbon's. Being 4 years younger that has a tendency to come around and he will (no doubt) be the Tigers closer of the future (or Rodney). Its not just that I'm a Red Sox fan but I look at Papelbon's splitter and I'm taken back everytime. His splitter is better than any pitch I saw Zumaya throw and its been a while since I saw a closer pound the strike zone like Papelbon. He doesn't walk ANYONE....all he does is throw fastball after fastball with an occassional NASTY splitter. Nobody can hit it because his control is so good. I may be a Red Sox fan but thats still very impressive. Zumaya can hit in the high 90s and thats good but I'm more interested in Paps accuracy and movement.
  5. True that the facts are facts....but instead of comparing Papelbon to Verlander we could compare him to Zumaya who is also in the bullpen. In that case I'm taking Papelbon hands down over Zumaya. As far as Hansen to Verlander there is no comparison. Even with his upside I think Hansen has a ways to go to reach what Verlander is. Its not out of the question (Hansen does have around the same velocity) but his location, stamina, and experience is not at the same level. .....it seems more fair to compare Papelbon to Zumaya and Lester to Verlander. I still think Jon Lester could be better than Papelbon and put up numbers like Justin Verlander. Right now Verlander means more to Detroit but Lester could be a huge key to the Red Sox rotation later this season. ...on a side note...I'm taking Francisco Liriano over all of these young guns.
  6. Jermaine Van Buren and Manny Delcarmen better stick on the Red Sox roster. If they keep getting outs I don't see how they could send them back down. I liked what I saw from David Pauley other than the results. Once he learns to locate that curveball he will do well. I would say he needs the rest of the season in Portland and next year in Pawtucket. His delivery reminds me a lot of Derek Lowe.
  7. I would be more interested in Kelvim Escobar than Livan Hernandez. At 30 years old he still has some time but the other nice thing is he can move to the bullpen. He has had injury problems in his career which means he could come at a smaller price. I'd deffinitly inquire about him but the Angels are a pain in the ass to deal with.
  8. The amount of pitches he would throw in a game last season makes him much older as well....at least his arm that is. We have showcased a few young arms this season....maybe they would be interested.
  9. Unless David Pauley shows something incredible in a couple starts I would expect Alvarez or Lester to take this spot later in the week. However, wouldn't it be nice for the kid to do a nice job and add to our young arm arsenal....perhaps trade bait.
  10. Could you imagine what was going through Pauley's head last night when Beckett was getting rocked....probably something along the lines of "Oh s***"
  11. I do not think its possible because consider how many teams struggle with the SS position. Depth in that area is very hard to come by and in the Philly's case they do not really have a replacement for him. If we were going to talk to anyone about a SS it would probably be the Angels, and as much as I like OC.....I want Brandon Wood.
  12. rotoworld.com is saying David Pauley will come up for Boston to pitch in place of David Wells. ....perhaps they are not as worried about him failing for the Red Sox as opposed to Jon Lester or Craig Hansen. At 22 years old he is having a great season in Portland but thats quite a jump for him.
  13. My guess is Clement goes on the DL....but I really think its just a cover to get him off the field. Lets bring up some kids to pitch because I was excited to see Van Buren and Delcarmen pitch the way they did today.
  14. I can't believe I'm going to say this but I agree with you. Top pitchers are more important than top hitters....especially in the Red Sox case because the entire team can hit.
  15. Ok so...you would take a .300 average hitter who can knock in 120+ RBI and 40+ HRs over a pitcher who can pitch 200 innings and win you 20 games with a 3.00 ERA? .....I'm taking the pitcher hands down.
  16. Houston is not trading Roy Oswalt for Manny Ramirez......I think you guys are placing too much value on him.
  17. Both Zito and Oswalt are around 5 years younger than Manny Ramirez. Forget the money, would you make that deal if you were Oakland or Houston??
  18. If you were going to choose a pitcher in the major leagues of equal value who would it be???
  19. C: Jason Varitek 1B: Kevin Millar 2B: Mark Bellhorn 3B: Bill Mueller SS: Orlando Cabrera OF: Manny Ramirez OF: Johnny Damon OF: Trot Nixon DH: David Ortiz SP: Pedro Martinez SP: Curt Schilling SP: Tim Wakefield SP: Derek Lowe SP: Bronson Arroyo CL: Keith Foulke ......just because they won the world series and did it in such amazing fashion. I never enjoyed watching a team as much as those guys.
  20. Thats a little extreme. There is life after Manny Ramirez in Boston. Just as there is life in Boston without Pedro Martinez, Johnny Damon, Nomar Garciaparra....etc. Icons come and go and when it comes down to the simple things I have to take a top pitching over hitting. I can guarantee the Red Sox still score a ton of runs without Manny Ramirez. The lineup is competitive from top to bottom. Adding a third ace to the rotation makes this rotation the best in the league. Throwing out Schilling, Beckett, and Schmidt is asking for a sweep almost every time. I really think the Red Sox would win more games. Of course there is nothing wrong with the way this team is going right now. They are in first place and solid in every aspect. Despite Matt Clement and David Wells issues....we still have two aces on the rotation and a shut down closer. We have strong talent in the minors, gold glove fielders, and a batting lineup that is effective from top to bottom. We really don't need to make a move unless we can walk off with a steal. My whole thing with getting Manny Ramirez involved in the conversation is the fact he will probably ask to be traded again
  21. I certainly don't see Washington taking on the money. I don't see Soriano making the Red Sox a better team either. He is not a better hitter or fielder than Ramirez. Thats why I brought up moving him for a pitcher because it would potentially make the Red Sox a better team. Both Schmidt and Ramirez are close to the same age. The SF Giants will want to keep getting people in the stands and Manny Ramirez can do that. With both Ramirez and Bonds in the outfield this season it would create a real buzz plus next season they have there replacement for Barry. The money is an issue but I think its something that can be resolved.
  22. Just a thought but.... What would people say to a Manny Ramirez-Jason Schmidt swap. Having an outfield of Coco Crisp-Willy Mo Pena-Trot Nixon is still very good. Unlike Oakland, Florida, and Washington....the Giants can take on the rest of Manny's contract. A deal like that would increase the rotation to a much higher level than the decrease in the outfield. I honestly don't feel our lineup would hurt that much with the loss. More at-bats for Pena who could technically bat cleanup or Youkilis, Lowell, Nixon, etc.....we hit the ball very well. I would rather have a rotation of Schilling-Beckett-Schmidt-Wakefield-Wells than a lineup that has Manny Ramirez in it. Its only a matter of time before he asks to be traded again anyways... thoughts?
  23. I think Jonathan Papelbon can easily withstand 88 IP. He never had fatigue issues in the minors or college and has pitched plenty of innings in the past. We wanted him to pitch 200 innings. Keith Foulke will really need to step up the next couple weeks. I'm happy the Red Sox brought up Manny Delcarmen...get the kid some more innings in the show.
  24. If David Wells can pitch effectively by June/July I don't see Theo Epstein making a move. That would leave the Red Sox with 2 excellent starters, 2 quality starters, and a #5 starter who could finish around .500 Trying to come up with a deal thats smart for the Red Sox while somehow removing Matt Clement would get complicated. I still think Jon Lester is a good bet to push Matt Clement out of his starting role this season and the only other option would be Roger Clemens rejoining the Red Sox.
  25. Find a way to get Albert Pujols in a Boston Red Sox uniform
