It's looking more and more like Renteria will re-sign with the Cardinals. Theo will reportedly meet with OC's agent tonight. A reported trade for Julio Lugo also fell through.

So Sheets is a FA next offseason? I think we are getting a little ahead of ourselves there. If he is maybe Milwaukee will trade him during the season since they will probably not sign him.
He was the 1st one who broke the Renteria story, which was somewhat of a surprise. As far as Cabrera, Renteria is a better SS than Cabrera. Once Theo realized he wasn't going to sign Pavano, I think he decided to spend Pavano's money on Renteria.
While you may think the Renteria signing takes away money from Varitek. I disagree. Gammons was on WEEI today and he thinks that we'll be able to sign Renteria, Pedro AND Varitek this week. So I really like the moves Theo is making, because we aren't really making any significant changes except we are getting Renteria who is a better hitter and an equal defensive shortstop to Cabrera.
The majority of the teams in the AL do not have great pitching. Besides Oakland and ourselves, I really dont consider a lot of staffs having great pitching. So if Tek can only hit bad pitching that's fine because there is more "bad" pitching than "good" pitching in this league.
I think one could be traded perhaps next year as part of a deadline deal where there may be some more aces on the market. I don't think Oakland would be interested because they've got Crosby who is there 2B of the future. I don't think Arizona is going to trade Randy Johnson, based on their recent signings. So I see a trade perhaps during the year or next offseason.
I still don't see how he is on the decline because if you look at all his major statistics (BA, OBP, Slugging and OPS) all but his slugging has gone up over the past 3 years. We really don't need Varitek to have great HR and RBI numbers because that is what Manny and Ortiz are here for.
I think they will give him 9 mil but I don't think they'll give him a no-trade clause. Remember he becomes a 10-5 player in 2 years so he will be getting the no-trade clause any way, so I wouldn't overreact about a no-trade clause.
