OK, I saw a line drive hitter who is no longer hitting XBH's. I saw a 2B who had little range and almost no speed.
Then, the stats backed up those findings. If he was so great, then it would show up in the statistics.
Tell me how you can refute:
No power
No range
No speed
Hey! Look how Manny's RBI's increase as soon as the Red Sox lineup becomes the most feared in baseball.
(HR's and RBI's are not the end all on how to judge a baseball player.)
I would have:
1. Damon
2. Jeter
3. Bonds
4. Rodriguez
5. Giambi
6. Abreu
7. Matsui
8. Posada
9. Cano
My team would rule.
But, I hope the Yankees do exactly what the thread starter suggested, that would rule.

A study was done that took the AB's from every player from 1980-2003. The minimum number of AB's accepted was 300.

(Remember, these are the AVERAGE players, like Mark Loretta)
You listed three of the best players in the game. You think they're in the same boat as Mark Loretta?
Rivera posted his lowest strikeout numbers in his career. He also had to adjust as the season progressed, because he could no longer dominate hitters with his cutter.
Ramirez was in a gradual decline for the last three years, but he bounced back pretty good. Though, he isn't the same player he was with the Guardians and early Red Sox.
Ortiz, hasn't been an every day player in the major leagues until the last two years. In a couple of years, you'll start to see a gradual decline. Look at Loretta, he's been in a gradual decline for the last two years.
Other than Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds, show me that. When players are past their prime (27-31), they decline. Pedro Martinez is going through that. Mark Loretta is going through that.
Some players do get better. But it's not A LOT. The majority of players decline.
If the Red Sox were to acquire Cabrera, they'd likely trade Mike Lowell and have the Angels send $5 million to cover an additonal year of Cabrera.
Cabrera is an offensive and defensive upgrade from Gonzalez. Youkilis can match Lowell's production.
I think Pedroia is more Loretta with a higher OBP.
I'd start him off in the nine hole, because he might flop. If he starts hitting we can move him up then.
How can no one not love this lineup?
1. Youkilis, 3B
2. Pedroia, 2B
3. Bonds, DH
4. Ortiz, 1B
5. Ramirez, LF
6. Delucci, RF
7. Pena, CF
8. Varitek, C
9. Cabrera, SS
This lineup would kick ass.
