I think we have a fine rotation too. But no thread is really complete until Jacksonianmarch chimes in, so here's what I expect Jackson to say:
"No doubt, the Sox have a strong rotation on paper. But you guys are being awfully short sighted. Schilling could be great and win 15 -18 games this year, or, as reported in another thread, he could possibly come in woefully overweight. At 40, he's getting really old and he's due for another ankle surgery. Beware.
Matsuzaka may be a terrific addition to your staff, but he is from Japan and is unproven. Until he pitches in the Majors he is no better than a #7 starter. He's also too short, much like Pedro was, and will probably have shoulder problems because he's Japanese.
Beckett could truly turn his career into that of a stud ace. But blister problems are really hard to overcome and he's just too young to learn the mental aspect of the game. And he's now going to be 27 and that's not too young anymore. If he doesn't make the jump to ace this year, he may never.
Papelbon put up pretty amazing numbers as a closer last year. But closing is not starting. As a starter you need to pitch every fifth day. It's not as easy to make the switch from the bullpen to the rotation. Plus shoulder problems are really hard to come back from. Once I had a pimple in my arm pit and it didn't go away for 18 months.
Wakefield is just too old and considering he broke a rib last year, expect him to break 5 on the other side this year. Broken ribs are really hard to come back from and they just lead to more broken ribs in the future.
Lester should be in rehab until he's 30. I don't see the need to rush him back before then. If you rush him back too soon he'll get cancer all over again.
