  1. I voted 13-14 only because I think he'll require making more than Schilling as a form of "respect" from the Sox. I think they are willing to go that high. If the Sox actually find a way to get Johnson, Pedro may go FA anyway. Ace-by-committee doesn't offer Petey all the attention he needs and I doubt the Sox will offer 16+ out of repect..
  2. I stand corrected: From the Globe's website. More Nomar rumblings BUZZ FACTOR -- Low: Are the White Sox getting in on the Nomar discussion again? There are rumblings on the 'Net that a three-way deal involving the Red Sox, White Sox and D-Backs could be in the works that would send Nomar from Boston to Chicago, prospects from Chicago to Arizona and -- here's the kicker -- Randy Johnson from Arizona to Boston. There's nothing solid to back this up at this point, but we're continuing to dig to see if there's anything to this. At this point, it's merely wild speculation. Other whispers out there: Nomar to the Dodgers in exchange for shortstop Cesar Izturus; Nomar to the Pirates for pitcher Kris Benson and shortstop Jack Wilson; Nomar to the Angels for prospect Casey Kotchman and either second baseman Adam Kennedy or shortstop David Eckstein. The shortstop-seeking Cubs also inquired about Nomar. At this point, however, none of these scenarios seems likely. We expect Nomar to ride out the season in Boston before leaving for free agency, but that could certainly change as the July 31 trading deadline approaches. ... On Wednesday morning's SportsCenter, ESPN's Peter Gammons said he didn't think Garciaparra would ultimately be dealt before the July 31 trade deadline. Gammons also said that Sox GM Theo Epstein went to Atlanta last weekend and talked to Nomar to try to ease his discontent with the team. Another interesting tidbit found in the Metro West Daily News: Apparently, Dodgers scouts were at Fenway on Tuesday night checking out Nomar.
  3. It's not on the Globe's website..
  4. manny is soooo gay.
  5. SEA DOGS NOTEBOOK: Kevin Thomas Zink gets chance to show his mettle and return to Dogs Copyright © 2004 Blethen Maine Newspapers Inc. He was the surprise of the 2003 season. Charlie Zink came from Class A Sarasota and, in a sense, from nowhere, to star for the Portland Sea Dogs. Zink pitched only six games for Portland, but he wowed us with his knuckleball, holding opponents to a .154 batting average. Last Aug. 30, Zink came one out away from a no-hitter. All of this success came in only Zink's first year of throwing the knuckler. What could the Hadlock crowds expect in 2004? The answer appears to be a struggle. Zink was 1-8 for the Sea Dogs with a 5.79 ERA. He leads the Eastern League in walks (72). Zink's difficulties were highlighted Thursday, allowing five runs in three innings in an 11-2 loss to Trenton. On Friday, Zink was sent back to Sarasota. "We need to get him there because maybe he was putting too much pressure on himself," Sea Dogs Manager Ron Johnson said. "Here's a guy who came out of obscurity and created a name for himself last year. He came up last year and dominated. "He's had innings where his stuff has been really good, but the consistency of inning to inning to inning has not been there. It was time to stop the bleeding, get him fixed, and then get him back here." Well, it looks like they haven't given up on him. I'll try and see when he starts next for Sarasota.
  6. I read somewhere that while Oritiz was playing in winterball one year, he was involved in a HR hitting contest. In ONE at bat, he hit 25 hrs.
  7. I think he was forced to change his style. The fans were starting to turn on him. If the sox come out dead to start the second half, he's going to be in real trouble.
  8. So you want to talk about Ks? Seriously, Tony Womack would probably have satisified us all in RSN.
  9. How about that? A guy playing out of position with a half-torn ligament playing with a reject second baseman? How many plays would Normar/Reese make as opposed to Reese/Bellhorn? Much. Hell, he even makes Millar look better at first. We all love Bellhorn's eye and bat, but the Sox are tougher to beat with Pokey's glove and arm. ("friendly scorers" aside)
  10. Let me also point out this: What is the problem with the Sox, why are they not in first place? Is it the offense? No, the offense has been up and down, but the return of Nomar, Trot and Mueller will/has fixed that. Is it the starting pitching? Outside of Lowe, no.. Is it the relief pitching? Outside of a few bad outings and Williamson on the DL, no. Is it the pitching in general? No, best in the league. Is it the hitting in general? No, they are like 3rd best in most categories. Is it the defense? YUP. 67 unearned runs? in 85 games? Yes the D is a problem. It's THE problem. You have to keep a guy like Pokey in the game. How many at bats does he usually get? 3-4 per game. How many possible outs can he save on D? 3-4 per game. It's a no brainer. He's worth keeping in the lineup.
  11. Welcome. You should probably change your name before you post much more. Crespo won't be back.
  12. Pokey has the best defense on the team. Maybe he wouldn't be my first choice as second baseman, but the odds of him making 2 errors in one inning leading to 6 un-earned runs are slim. Isn't anybody else scared to high hell that this team WILL make the playoffs and lose in the playoffs on an error? I'm telling ya, I can see it right now. We need to keep some D in the lineup, even if we score 10 runs a game.
  13. Boy, I can pick 'em, huh? From Mainetoday.com Knuckleball pitcher Charlie Zink (1-8, 5.79) was demoted to Class A Sarasota. Ryan Cameron replaces him in the rotation.
  14. and NO HAIRCUT! Take if from a guy with male pattern baldness: Let the man be. It is very impressive.
  15. I have never had any beef with Damon. I don't care what he makes this year or next, it's chump change. He's good and the only reason people bitch about him is his salary. I think he was injured most of last year anyway (because of his outstanding efforts), so I think we're finally seeing the guy we thought we had to begin with.
  16. Hellova job by Arroyo. HELLOVA! I had hoped he could pitch that well every game. This Leskanik guy has been quite impressive since joining as well.
  17. OH MY GOD, that soooo hit the spot. I love Billy Mueller. He is the difference...
  18. I have the Cowboy Up dvd - though I didn't like it that much. I hate it when the narration plays over the play-by-play announcers, and the ending really sucks I also have Forever Fenway that came out in 1987 on VHS. I have the official Red Sox Video Yearbook by Kodak for 1986 which is very cool, except they overdubbed Vin Scully and the rest of the post season announcers with sound alikes.. - it really takes away from the Angels playoff games. I can't find it anywhere on the net, so I guess it's rare. I have the '86 AL East clincher recorded on VHS too somewhere. Along with the 2003 Wildcard clincher, but only the 8th and 9th innings and postgame. That's actually pretty cool to rewatch (I did over the winter a couple of times..) I also have games 2, 6 and 7 of the '86 World Series I recorded on VHS. I have never watched them and should probably burn them.
  19. Welcome to the site! So are you considering converting to a Red Sox fan, or are you just here to laugh at us? I always liked the Tigers - probably because I saw an old Roy Schieder movie called Tigertown when I was young. Just a classic franchise who are finally getting it back together. It's about time.
  20. Has anyone else noticed that since The Shitstorm (game 3 of the Yankees series last week) that the Sox actually have been doing a little more bunting and putting runners in motion? Or is it just me and wishfull thinking? That said, I have to agree. It's just a personal prefference... I think a lot of opposing pitchers lose their game if they worry about runners taking off or a bunt about to go down. Take the case of our own Mr. Lowe. He can pitch great when nobody is on base. But once he lets a runner on base he becomes a totally different pitcher. He slows everything down, misses his pitches and gets lost in his own head. That's because he's more worried about the runner than the batter. I think there are different ways of keeping the pressure on the opposing pitcher and bunting some and swiping a bag (even delayed steals) are definitely two ways to do that. It also sets everybody in the infield in motion, creating holes and takes players out of their defensive strategy/allignment. On paper I understand why you don't bunt or steal (never give away an out because you only get 27 all game), but I think that mindset should be reserved for when the game is either tied or close early, or you have the lead. If you are behind late, screw Moneyball and just play baseball. Does anybody know the stat for this year for how many games the Red Sox have won when trailing after the 7th inning??? I don't recall it being too many.
  21. Assuming it's a three year deal, how much should the Sox offer Pedro to stay in Boston?
  22. Which begs the question... We moved up Schill to face the A's, so our rotation for the sluggin' rangers is: Lowe, Arroyo and Wake?
  23. WOW! I wasn't even ragging on Bellhorn. I just happened to post just after Yankshater I wasn't knocking anyone - just making a general statement about Mueller. Totally UN Related to his post!!!!! Man, you guys must hate me. damn.
  24. Mueller in there and hitting well makes all the difference in the world, I tells ya.
  25. Why not play the Belly at 1b more often? He's got the glove to handle it.
