I've read in a couple of places that his tax hit for 2022 is 5.8 million.

I defy anyone to figure it out.

Edit:

Here's my guess.

The contract guarantees him $10 million. However, in order to collect the full $10 million, he has to opt into a second year, which would make it 2 years and $10 million for an AAV of $5 million. If he declines it's 1 year with an AAV of $6 million.

So should the AAV for 2022 be $5 million or $6 million? I assume that to get it to $5.8 million, there must be some weird little adjustment based on the option year being less than the first year.

I think it is simpler than we think. Here's my understanding:

Option years don't count on the AAV. He got $6M with a $4M buyout, so it's $10M on the 2022 tax line.

They don't make adjustments after the fact. $10M counts against 2022, so the $4M buyout is subtracted from the remaining option AAV, so $26M/2 is $13M, but subtract $4M from $26 and it's $22M/2. That's $11M on the tax line for 2023 and 2024, assuming they take the option.

I could be wrong.

You are wrong LOL.

The $4 mill isn't a buyout, it's a player option for 2023.

I guess player options count, too.

cots has him at $10M for '22 on the lux tax line. They don't count the $4M twice.

I believe Cots is wrong on this one. I've noticed their standards are slipping.

This article from The Athletic (subscription required) reports the AAV as 5.8 million and says the 10 million figure was incorrect. Bosox Injection FWIW also says 5.8 million.

It doesn't make sense that it would be 10 million for 2022, because the only way he gets the 10 million is to opt into 2023 at 4 million.

That does make sense, since it's not the Sox that are forced to pay a minimum of $10M (6+4).

cots used to be the rock.

Sale and Paxton are both damaged goods and a gamble for 2023. I’m glad I don’t have to decide whether to let Paxton go or to make a Price-like deal on Sale.

My guess is Bloom will also look at what else is out there in addition to evaluating what the Sox have now.

To complicate things further, Bloom and JH have to decide about Bogey and Raffy. Moonslav has estimated significant salary space should be available, but I don’t think it’s enough to cover those two and to rebuild the rotation.

To trade Sale, we'd have to take back salary, or offer a prospect with him. According to BTV, his value is -$26M, which is about the same as Bello's +$26M. Would we trade Sale and Bello for nothing, except to free up budget and tax space?

How about Sale, Yorke, Duran and Jordan?

I kinda think Sale is going to comeback strong.

Interesting. If the Sox keep Sale and Bello, they just need to be worth $26M. Bello was pretty good in his last and at Worcestor, and Sale is very competitive except when he is recovering from elbow, rib, pinky, wrist, and other broken stuff.
