Counting Kotsay, 12 of the current 30 MLB managers have been employed by the Red Sox at some point in their careers, as either a player, coach, manager, or front office executive…

Didn’t the Red Sox sign him knowing that he needed knee surgery after picking him up late the previous season and he never played again for the Red Sox.

My only Kotsay memory was his pinch triple over the head of BJ Upton in game 5 of the 2008 NLDS, bringing a one time Tampa 7-0 lead to 7-6. And then Kotsay later scored the tying run after a 6,587 pitch at-bat by Coco Crisp.

 

Beyond that, Kotsay just didn’t do much for the Sox, much like Texas Rangers’ manager Chris Woodward the following season…

They signed him as a free agent following the 2008 season. He immediately had a knee operation and didn’t play for the Red Sox until June 2009 and played 27 games for them.

That 2009 Red Sox dugout had 4 current MLB managers in it, with Francona, Kotsay, Chris Woodward, and Rocco Baldelli…

The Francona influence is very strong throughout baseball.
