Sam Hartman is one hell of a player. That 4th down run was a player winners make

No INTs and 14 TDs on the season is impressive.

ND got one snatched away from them last week, and tonight they snatched one away from Duke. They could be 6-0 right now, or just as well be 4-2. A great play by Hartman, but did you see what D Duke was in on the Hartman run? Yep the old ITDD. Invitation To DEFEAT Defense. 3 man rush. Coaches never learn.

I don’t understand the prevent defense s***. It only makes sense if there is like 5 seconds left and the other team needs a miracle. Dukes blitzes were causing issues all day today and on the biggest play of the game, against a team with their top 3 WR out they decide to rush 3 and not even spy Hartman? Makes no sense

Makes no sense, but I’ve seen teams run the ITDD for years, and more times then not it has hurt the team using it more times than it helped them.

All game long, teams don't know when a blitz is coming or what sort of coverage might be switched to, then, poof: they know everything about the D for the last few seconds or minutes.

A well deserved loss for Notre Dame tonight. A pretty inept offense with no running game, and who couldn’t make at least 3 short yardage on 3+4 downs. 2 bad face mask penalties one on each side of the ball added to the misery. Unfortunately I don’t see the losses ending with this one tonight.

Hartman had gone all year with no INTs, and he threw two, tonight.

I'm tired of "waiting till next year." This GM has to be fired!

I don’t think they would be doing any better with Kelly, but Freeman may be in over his head. Is was a very quick hire.

I was joking.

I like the Freeman hire, but it will take time.

I'm not sure we can ever win again, unless we weaken the academic requirements.

This game is largely on Hartman. 5 turnovers is unacceptable

Hartman had a bad game no doubt, but the O Line, and running backs pretty much sucked too.

Hartman turtled when facing a good D. He was riding high facing Tennessee St but doesn't stand in when rushed and makes poor decisions. ND would have been better off grooming a QB of the future. Hartman is Jack Coan-lite

Notre Dame for some reason has had trouble developing QB lately, and has had to get a transfer 2 out of the last 3 years. Buchner wasn’t that good either.

I can't help but think back to the glory days, and the fact that the championship we won my freshman year was as a result of our 3rd string QB getting a shot due to injury to the #2 and flopping by the #1. Dan Devine had Joe Montana 3rd of the depth chart in 1977!

You'd think QB, being the cerebral position, would be the one area we could recruit well in.

The Irish laid a big egg in Louisville. The turnovers and penalties were killers, but they did not play well in general. The blocking and the tackling were weak. Can't beat a good team that way.

Maybe looking ahead to USC, and that is on the coach.

How can the O line and rushing game look much better vs Ohio St than Louisville?

They got beat fair and square.

They have not been a top team in a very long time.

The nationwide TV contract should lure top recruits, but I think the rigorous academic requirements hurt, badly. Not only do many great players not even get a look due to academics, the team usually benches several good players, every year, due to low grades. Don't get me wrong, they have "pad the GPA" classes at ND, too, and ways to get a GPA up that others students don't have access to, for free, but it hurts the skill level of the team.

Lou Holtz somehow skirted the rules and won a championship, and that was our last one- way back in 1988.

Good win for Notre Dame tonight. Great effort by the D, and the offense took advantage of the gifts from the D. Freeman gets a reprieve for now, and after 4 tough games in a row the team gets a much needed break. Still got some tough games coming up the rest of the season.

This game makes that Louisville loss even more frustrating. The defense was amazing against the future #1 pick Caleb Williams and Benjamin Morrison is proving he is the best corner in college football.

This game did feature another another boneheaded play though. With the Irish up 21 near the end of the half, Notre Dame gets a strip sack, which USC got back and half the defense ran down field and was celebrating the sack. Meanwhile, USC was running to line trying to spike ball for the field goal. Notre Dame was forced to call timeout to avoid a penalty and giving USC the field goal (which they got anyway). If they weren’t celebrating the sack, I’m not sure USC would’ve had enough time to snap and spike ball. It didn’t matter, but it seems weekly a mental error happens like this from either a player or the coaching staff.

That's on the coach. Hopefully, he learns from it, but I also think the Louisville loss was on the coach, too. The team was obviously looking ahead to last night's game.

I'm not saying I dislike the coach. He got the team playing very well, at times. I'm more hopeful, now about the future of ND football than I have been in a very long time.

The coach was a way to quick hire after Kelly left, and a more thorough search should have been done. Freeman was not the best candidate for the job, but was handy.

He is really young, and is really good players coach/recruiter. He has a lot of talent coming in and I do think he’s getting better every week. I know it’s hard to be patient in college with a team expected to compete each year, but there was some “growing pains” expected with Freeman. However, He already has as many top 10 wins as Brian Kelly had in 12 years. I like Freeman

Best game N.D. has played in a while. So much more aggressive than they were against Louisville. You wouldn't know it was the same team. A good pass rush is vital in football today. Freeman has some learning to do, but he seems a lot more likable than Kelly. The players seem to love him.

I just don’t believe if you put the job out there that he would have been the best candidate for the job, and if he already hadn’t been in the building he wouldn’t have gotten the job. I said after last season with the schedule for this year I saw an 8-4 team, which now at the best 9-3. That’s not good enough at ND.

I didn’t care for Kelly, and yes Freeman is likable, but I just think if ND would have taken more time they could have done better.

Freeman was considered one of the best up and coming coaches in the industry. He would’ve been hired quickly if Notre Dame didn’t promote him to HC.

Recruiting is so important . If you can't recruit well, you are not going to win. And it certainly helps recruiting if you can play like N.D. did last night.
