Neither of these guys could pitch their way out of a paper bag tonight. Location....SUCKS.

I am beginning to wonder: If you just lopped off the top 5-10 starters in MLB's ERA's, what would the rest of MLB starter ERA's look like as an average across the group.

I can probably sort it that way if I take the time.

The pitching staff on the teams now a days would beat the crap out of any team 30 years ago when 95 was super fast. This generation is so much better than the olden times and the pool of players is so much better, it makes you think the stars of old wouldn't really have a chance against these newer players.

I kindly disagree.

Not much of an arm on Lopez. He circled Santana's ground ball, got all his momentum going toward 1st base and threw a lollypop over there.

As far as fastballs are concerned, thirty years ago the speed of the fastball was measured when it crossed home plate. It's now measured a few feet from the release.

Also years ago there were more pitchers and fewer throwers.

A) the devices they had to measure velocity were crap. If you think Nolan Ryan only threw 95 for example, you are dreaming.

B) these guys throw 95+ but for the most part can't throw more than 4-5 innings. Teams carry 13-14 pitchers so they can keep running in guys that can throw 95+. That skews these teams to carrying more pitchers than everyday players and there is no bench strength in everyday players any longer. Teams are hamstrung with three guys on their bench one that has to be the backup catcher. If the DH goes down you have to replace him with somebody on your bench so while the DH is certainly a better hitter than your average pitcher, even your DH leaves you with a short bench.

Frankly, its a cluster, the quality of pitching only being part of it.

I have no idea about that. But what I keep hearing is the player now a days a junk compared to olden day players. I'd bet that the olden day players were about 5 mph slower than the guys now a days. And had no idea what a change up was, a split was. or how to work the count as much as the players or catchers now.

Those guys that pitched 9 innings years ago, would have been lit up in the 1st or second inning.

The hitters now are machines. They would pound the crap out of olden day pitchers. They are smarter, more studied, stronger, faster and much more studied.

I'd bet the bench player now a days would give you yesteryear starters a run for their money. They are that much better.

Stronger on average for sure....not better.

As for more studied, they should STUDY base running because none of them can do it any longer. Can't bunt either. Can't for the most part hit and run either.

Keep telling yourself that. I think it will make you feel better.

It doesn't make me feel better. It makes me feel worse!
