Interesting game so far. I'm about as anti-ERod as it's possible to be, but the simple fact is that horrible score is mostly the result of one good swing and a proverbial 3 run dinger. ERod wasn't half bad in innings 2, 3, and 4.

Sox hitting sucks so far, but Wheeler is more than capable of doing that against any lineup.

It might even be worth noting that we are still in the second trip thru the Sox batting order when good pitching is expected to dominate.

Wheeler is capable of being tough the third time thru the order, but let's just see.

Meanwhile, Sawamura did a fantastic job stopping what could easily have been a put-the-game-away rally.

I assume you too have watched just about every inning of every game this year. My very strong impression so far is that good pitching beats good hitting every time, and today the Sox are going against one of the best in MLB. He pitches the most innings per start in MLB and still has the 12th best ERA, the 7th most K's, etc..

When even our best hitters--JDM, Bogie, Devers, maybe Verdugo--go against really good pitching, they are just as overwhelmed as the rest of the lineup. As someone else on talksox said, the difference between great hitters and so-so hitters is their consistency in hitting bad pitches, which are usually thrown by weak pitchers.

If Cora wants to give JDM and Bogie a 2 day break, I'm for it. It's a very long season, 6 games a week for six straight months.

Indeed it’s a long season but why stop your momentum? I don’t see the Yankees or rays players taking days off.

Still think he’s washed up. Takes him 14 pitches to get someone out.

Devers K'd, but also fouled off both a high slider and very low slider.

This is the 3d time thru the order, and, with two out from the bottom of the order, Hernandez singled, Santana worked a BB, and Devers actually had some good cuts and contact.

Nevertheless, Wheeler is one tough hombre.

They ain’t seen great pitching yet. Yankees pitching looks ridiculous right now. Don’t know if it’s that good or the white sox are pathetic. Again in a couple of weeks we will see if this team’s a mirage or they’re good enough.

No question he stinks this season, not just today. Plus he has always needed too many pitches per out.

Credit, however, to Cora leaving him in for the 5th and huge, huge credit to Sawamura for rescuing that decision. ERod got to make 103 pitches which he can hopefully learn from.

Very good post.

Still a bit question as to who goes down when sale is back.

The SOX have 4 very good hitters. One (Dugo) is out on a day-to day. Knowing this, Cora the Coddler, decided to rest two of the three remaining. Based on how well Wheeler is pitching, it may not have made a difference. However, the line-up Cora put together doesn't define the motto "giving my team the best chance to win."

I know the players love Cora because he pampers them so well, but being a fan and not a well compensated player, I do not love Cora. And I realize Cora will lose sleep over my not loving him.

The players also love Cora because he's a winner, and they win with him.

I'm not saying I agree with resting players as much as he does, but it's a long season, and we'll need our big 4 hitters healthy and fresh all season long to have any real chance at winning it all, this year.

It's easier to find a pitcher to send down than choose between Santana or Chavis when Arroyo returns.

BTW, the Brasier question may arise before the Sale one

Someone may get hurt before then, or someone mya be struggling so much, the choice is easy.

If the choice is hard, we're probably still doing very well, so it's a good problem to have..

You are making what I believe to be a false assumption, namely, that JDM and Bogaerts would be getting multiple hits if not dingers off Wheeler. To be perfectly honest, I might agree with you on playing Bogie and JDM in a day game after a night game except for one important fact. Starting pitcher today was a guy named Eduardo Rodriguez, who was lucky to go 4 innings only giving up 4 runs.

This game ain't over, but it had loss written all over it yesterday when we knew Wheeler was starting against ERod.

Good pitching beats good hitting almost every time.

I say again. This game had loss written all over it yesterday when we knew Wheeler was going against ERod. Seriously, how can you possibly believe that ERod could outpitch Wheeler?

Rodríguez needed to keep this within striking distance and he didn’t. I knew he would f*** up our streak. Anyway this team has a huge homestand coming up. Have to play better at home. Could be tied with the rays after today with the Yankees one game out in the win column.

This team has to hit good pitching as well. You just can’t hit bums only .

I didn't assume anything. In fact I did say that as well as Wheeler is pitching it may not have made a difference. My main point was that Cora did not give his team the best chance of winning, and that should be the manager's main job.

Well, they haven't so far. When a good pitcher is on, the other team's bats go silent no matter which team.

Are you actually unaware that we are getting about one no-hitter a week this season?

While good pitching gives every team a better chance of winning than good hitting, it's not even close to "almost every time," or we'd see teams going 28-5 in starts from the best pitchers.

Look at Pedro: he was 219-100 overall, yet he was:

11-11 vs NY

11-11 vs ATL

6-7 vs HOU

3-5 vs LAD

4-4 vs STL

All teams that hit very well back in those days.

Winning what? All 162 games.

Try this on. If Cora really wanted to win this game today, he would not have started Eduardo Rodriguez, who stinks this season.

Or try this on. The Phillies aren't playing their superstar $35M rightfielder today. Granted, he's in a slump, but going against the incompetent ERod might have been the perfect therapy to bring him out of it.

So fine, give me some good examples from this year when these Boston Red Sox put an ace on the mound and he got hit hard.

Or name an opposing ace on the level of Wheeler whom the Sox pounded.

I dare you. No, I double dare you.

Meanwhile, way to go to Franchy!!!

Is there a reading comprehension problem here? Giving a team the best chance of winning doesn't mean they're gonna win every game. Geez.

We don't have an ace, and yet we win. That should be evidence enough, but I can give you a few examples where we lit up opposing aces or top closers.

This team's offense seems to do worse vs newbies, struggling pitchers or journeymen.
