MLB front offices have so much more information than the casual fan. This publicly available 26-page scouting report on righthander Chris Flexen was a rarity last offseason:

https://benhowell71.com/chris-flexen/

Teams are gonna' face a pitcher having a great day and silencing bats. Flexon is having one of those. Can't remember the last time he missed his spot today.

The real issue to me is that I don't get the impression that anybody past ERod will match that sort of pitching performance and we appear to be Swiss cheese in the field.

This team has to play better. Was hoping for 3 out of 4 against the Mariners. Now at best they need the split. They’re playing some s***** baseball any you slice it.

Perhaps, VAZ will get his stroke back.

That would help. Seems to have gotten into his head and he has been anxious at the plate lately. He cannot hit that way.

I can see the natives getting restless at 5-9 in the order.

We only have 4 clearly good hitters: Devers, Bogey, JD & Verdugo.

Having a non top 4 hitter bat 1st or 3rd helps spread it out to the 5 slot, but yes, our bottom of the order has only promises and wishful thinkings.

That being said, look around MLB. Very few teams have 5 or 6 players who can consistently hit .800+.

Vaz looked like he might step into that role. His.798 OPS from 2019-2020 looked encouraging, but he has slumped.

A Cordero/Renfroe platoon offered some hopes for a combined OPS of over .780, but that is now looking like an extreme longshot.

Hernandez has hit near or over .800 a couple times, but is more like a ,730-.760 ki[nd of hitter.

Arroyo will not likely end up over .780, let alone .800, but he is the only one showing hope, right now.

Dalbec was my best hope, and he did start showing some signs of life, but .800 may be out of reach.

Marwin needs trash cans to hit .800.

I would never post that unless it was Pedro in his prime or Jake DeGrom, who, I hope, doesn't start against the SOX on Wednesday.

If he starts, we can expect this same result. Shut out.

Only in Boston and possibly NY would the natives get restless if 5-9 are not either batting .300 or have an OPS over 800. The difference is that we could be 10 games over .500 and the natives here would STILL get restless if 5-9 were not performing to their expectations. The Yankee fans might be a bit less restless at 10 games over .500.

We can come up with a rational here for the last guy in the order being stout at the plate.

Good post, Moon.

Again, 5-9 is not a problem. 6-9 is a problem. And 6 may turn it around.

Hitting is way down across baseball this year.

At 125, the Red Sox have the highest OPS+ in the American League ... by a comfortable margin:

The Red Sox have the league's fourth-best ERA+ at 117.

If we keep fielding like we are that is going to put a lot of pressure on both the pitching and the hitting...really the pitching more than anything else.

To my eyes, Verdugo is the only legit OFer we have and X is the only legit IFer we have. You can have the rest.

Rafi is really disappointing me in the field so far.

We seem to be cooling off the last couple weeks though. Granted we had a nice game yesterday, but 3 or 4 runs seems to be our comfort zone lately

Which don’t get me wrong, if we had the Dodgers pitching im fine with it. Dodgers offense has cooled off too. Unfortunately we don’t have the pitching. I said in another game thread we need about 5 or 6 runs a game to have a good chance at winning most nights.

For one thing, this is the first sporting event I have been to since February 2020, and first Sox game since July 2019. So, very literally speaking, I'm just happy to be here

Gotta' love NESN.

The silver lining from this game apparently is that Verdugo only had a leg cramp.

NESN crew musing about the possibility of help coming for the OF from the farm. I would normally say its a little early for that kind of talk. Probably justified this year.

Well, the fans at the old Roman colosseum had fun when the home team christians would get beat by the visiting lions.

This made me laugh so hard
