I agree, and I said they wouldn't do it. They apparently wanted us to pay part of Myers's deal for just Betts- an insane demand.

 

In theory, paying Myers is equal to paying Price by the trade simulator, but if the Padres cannot afford paying more for Price than what Myers costs, then of course no deal will be made.

 

What I liked about the idea of a Price for Myers deal a while back was that Myers has an AVV of "just" $13.8M, so he'd be worth more to a team walking the luxury tax line than the Padres. In theory, we could trade Price + $17M a year for Myers and break even on the tax.

 

Would SD take Price + $9.5M x 3 yrs for Myers straight up? They'd be paying the same. We'd pay the same but save $7.5M a year on the tax line. The problem is, Price is better than Myers, and we have a 1Bman, now.

If Bloom wants to flip the script and give the Padres a chance to do the same I say f*** the Dodgers and Friedman let him lose Mookie over one of his prescious prospects ....enjoy the LA fans after they get wind ass wipe .The more I think about this deal the angrier I get .Bloom May fail right off the bat if he accepts this horseshit as is with cash .....we need prospects .Verdugo and a banged up pitcher will never fly in Boston for an icon .

I think Braterol was an important piece in the deal, but he shouldn't be a deal-breaker. Getting someone close to his value or even Maeda instead would be fine with me.

Offloading $16 mil AAV of Price and the entire contract of Betts is important to Bloom. The Padres deal may have had more players and some upside, but the need to take Myers back and not send off Price makes it an inferior deal. Also, Verdugo is a real prize here. I get that Bloom likes Campusano, but it’ll help save face for the Sox if they get someone they can plug into Betts’ spot from day 1.

 

The Dodgers need to offload Maeda. They also need to offload Stripling and Pederson so they can stay under the cap. I don’t expect the Dodgers to stay under the cap forever, but once Buehler and Bellinger get pricey, they’ll need to not be repeat offenders. Far too many moving parts for the second guy to be nixing the deal. If Verdugo failed his physical, so be it. But they can work with Graterol

I wouldn't trade Beni, but assuming the Betts/Price deal with LA ultimately goes through, I would indeed call the Padres back and see if they're still interested in sending us Myers...with our newfound payroll flexibility, we could take his contract along with a prospect or two.

Any warm body, like I said...since we'd essentially be getting neutral value ourselves, it wouldn't be anyone significant and isn't terribly important. Maybe they have more use for a Brian Johnson or Sam Travis than we do, or like one of our lower-level prospects as a lottery ticket.

Just add a middling prospect to the mix and be done with it. Maeda would be wasted on this version of the Red Sox.

They do dump Myers, though, but it's far from worth the rest of the deal.

 

(BTW, although the deal came out close to even, the trade value site did not accept the suggested traded, as expected).
