Wjat sayeth Ye you guys who pay more attention to trade whispers than I do?

I like the idea but I'm not at all certain we can get a decent reliever for him straight-up. For one thing other GM's know we NEED that reliever and they're going to be showing up at the trade wearing masks and guns, and Moreland's inability to stay on the field makes him less than desirable.

But I like the idea.

I doubt we trade Moreland. We will use Chavis at 2B.

Also, the only team that might want Moreland would be a contender. Not only would they probably want us to pay part or most of his salary, they'd probably not want to part with a RP'er, because they can't afford to weaken their pen for a playoff run.

A 3 team deal might be the only way to make it happen. Moreland to a contender. A prospect to a third team. A RP'er to us from the 3rd team looking to shed salary or a FA to be rental.

Look at the contenders and Moreland's recent play before considering him a trade asset.

He's a first baseman who hits homers, is slumping and missed a good part of the year.

TB has Choi. Moreland is a minus on the OBP but a plus on OPS due to his SLG. Maybe they want Moreland?

MIN has plenty to cover 1b with Sano and Cron

CLE has Santana

HOU has Alvarez

OAK has Olsen

WAS has Adams

PHI has Hoskins

NYY don't need him

ATL has Freeman

CHC has Rizzo

MIL has Thames

STL has Goldy

LAD has Muncy

ARI has Walker/Lamb

SF has Belt

That's about it unless another team jumps in the mix. Moreland is not a pure upgrade over anyone. Plus with his slump and his recent injury, there is no chance the sox get anything for him

He might be an upgrade over Walker/Lamb. But he isn’t worth much in a trade.

Last year the Sox got Steve Pearce for minor league infielder Santiago Espinal. That’s about Moreland’s value...

The Dodgers reportedly now have corner infielder Tyler White:

How does Mitch Moreland compare with Tyler White?

A serious contender may want an experienced bat off the bench and solid backup 1bman, a trade with him involved is very much in play

He’s tradeable, but if the buyer isn’t gonna use him in the lineup, then why spend much? His return isn’t gonna be a reliever with value. It’ll be a reclamation project or a C level prospect

Great to hear from you. You always make sense. Some of the 1B men I see around could probably use a defensive replacement also. Moreland has had both offensive and degensixe talents,

Mitch Moreland also is owed the balance of his 2019 salary of $6.5 million. That price tag could limit his suitors.

Moving Moreland would basically be a salary dump . You won't get much in return. Certainly not a reliever who is any better than what we already have.

Silly question.

But as Chavis and Pearce are both injured, if the Sox were to trade Moreland, who would play first!? Brock Holt?

Maybe the Sox need Moreland more than anyone else does right now...

No harm in trying! Maybe couple him with one our hot shot relievers!

Well, the harm is it leaves the Sox weaker at 1b...

Vazquez, on days when he isn't catching. If only to keep his bat in the lineup.

Who thought anyone would be saying THAT at the beginning of the season? :D

If they actually could get any sort of relief pitcher of merit (and I suspect they could get somebody that would toss one of our bums out of the bullpen) I would gleefully kiss Moreland goodbye. Its not that I hate the player. Its just that we simply cannot and do not pitch. The staff is a train wreck and I have little faith that the starters will come around enough to not continue to extend the pen beyond its means.

Also as for LeVangie, show me a coach that survives the complete capitulation of his asset responsibilities. If they were to win their way to and through an ALCS, he would survive. I think that is highly unlikely and I suspect LeVangie will be toast as a consequence of how much the rotation has underperformed and how irritatingly similar most of them pitch. There is something underlying all this nibble, nibble, nibble crap.

The only two guys we have in that rotation that don't nibble now are Erod.....EROD for heaven sake, King Nibbler every other year I can remember and Sale who does depend on getting hitters to chase but does not nibble to get it done. I just think Sale is obviously overthrowing to achieve FB velo that came quite naturally to him in the past and that is making him both wild in and out of the strike zone. Wild out of the strike zone means more pitches that hitters do not even offer at and wild in the strike zone means more pitches that even at 97-98 don't get past the hitters. Plus a number of those balls the Rays hitters were fouling off will end up over the wall if Sale keeps throwing FB's wild in the strike zone like that.

The rest of them, nibble, nibble, nibble....Price, Porcello, the new guy....nibble, nibble, nibble.

Slumping?

The guy has had 7 PAs since his return. I guess you can call it a slump, but he's only played 1 full game since coming back. Before his return he has these most recent numbers:

.818 in 22 most recent PAs

1.000 in his previous 60 PAs.

.859 since April 5th (146 PAs)

Nobody could use those numbers.

Plus, some of the 1Bman you listed on the contenders could be moved to DH, or MM could DH (or platoon 1B/DH). He could even play LF.

Yep, it worked again, Buddy! Every time I want to bench or trade someone, they go on a tear! Go, man!

All due respect to bosoxmal, but "last days of Pompei" is a silly analogy because the people of that city barely knew what hit them. The volcanic eruption caught them completely by surprise.

The injuries to Moreland and Holt and others turned out to be more positive than not because we got to see Chavis, Hernandez again, etc.

What makes things tricky for Cora right now is that he has to keep 13 pitcher, 8 relievers, which means he only gets 3 spare lineup players--a second catcher and two extra infielders/outfielders. However, what Cora normally likes to do is field lefty bats vs. righty starters and vice versa. Plus, if Leon is catching, he likes to get Chavez into the lineup as DH, 1B, or even 2B or 3B.

Right now the least versatile guy among the 12 lineup players is Moreland who can only play 1B and also seems slower than usual. However, he still has that .852 OPS and pretty good against righty pitchers, which the Sox see more often than lefties.

So, while I agree Moreland could be expendable/tradeable, I can also see reasons for keeping him. After two hitless games since returning, last night he had a double and a single.
