They declined his option, so he got $2 mil there. Then he got $7.5 mil for 2019. The Yanks save $3 mil compared to picking up the option. I like Gardner. He’s a versatile guy who runs well and plays good D. But he should have been allowed to walk. Oh well

Gardner deal, might indicate the Yanks will not pursue Harper, it's over crowded OF now

Judge

Stanton

Hicks

Gardner

Ellsbury (painful to mention this guy)

Frazier

Makes me wonder if we are gonna deal from our surplus

I don't know, not many of the are worth much on the trade market

Stanton and Judge are not going anywhere

Hicks still has that "injuty prone" label attached

Ellsbury.... I don't need to elaborate on this

Frazier is coming from a lost season and nobody knows for sure the type of player he can become

Gardner just secured a 10-5 (no trade rights) not sure Cashman signed him to just flip him somewhere else

He's toast, and he can no longer do the one thing that made him valuable -- steal bases.

He's not the player he was, but still far from toast. In a down year he had 2.8 bWAR. It might be the beginning of the end but he should have at least 1-2 years on him

Don't even count Ellsbury, and one can DH.

You are probably right; they didn't sign Gardner to essentially $9.5M to be a 4th OF'er.

even in that scenario no room for Harper

I think it means CC is gone, most of his value was for his clubhouse presence and leadership, now Gardner might fill the role all by himself and still can be productive

He brings defense, some speed, and a good at bat. He doesn’t have the power he once had. He doesn’t have the speed he once had. Yeah, his hit is $9.5 mil this year, but $2 mil was sunk cost. A $7.5 mil player on the FA market is either a second tier starter or a highly utilized backup. I think he’s going to be our leadership presence plus insurance for Hicks or Frazier

He’s worth something as a 4th OFer, but I’m just confused as to the timing. This makes me wonder if they’re gonna give Frazier a go in the OF or if they are gathering contingent players because Frazier is gonna be part of a deal. I honestly have no idea.

I like the move for several reasons, he still can be productive, is not like his production fell of a cliff; it's a good clubhouse presence to mentor the young guys, he leads by example (hustle, preparation, etc); insurance for injuries and finally it says great things about management, like this is not only business, we will take care of your when the time comes.

I think the Yanks at least got good value in the 4 years we had with Gardner. As a true 4th OFer, I love this move. But this isn't a true 4th OFer move. We have a guy who could serve as a 4th OFer in Frazier. Our DH is an average OFer. It isn't like this offers us anything of substance when Hicks hits FA. It is just a puzzling move in a vacuum. All will be revealed, but if the plan is for Gardner to start day 1 in LF, then I will not be happy
Posted
They will try Frazier in LF and maybe divide his time 50/50 with Gardner at the beginning of the season, if Frazier performs then it will be his job full time

I think that's a dicey game to play UNLESS we plan to allocate all of our off season assets to pitching. It also doesn't fix our right handed issues. Frazier is a heck of a talent who cannot seem to stay healthy. If he stays healthy, then we can actually make a decision on him. If he doesn't, then we are hitching our wagon to a 35 yr old OFer who declined sharply and ended up on the bench for the finish of 2018.

It also makes me wonder if we are in the market for an offensive catcher capable of supplanting Sanchez and we move Gary to backup C and DH. This would move Stanton to the OF on a semi-regular basis, especially against left handed pitchers. A guy like Wilson Ramos would make sense in that mode, or Realmuto on a grander scale. If we did that, we'd effectively have a built in 4th OFer with Frazier being the 5th OFer.

Too early to give up on Sanchez, Realmuto is awesome but I still think Sanchez can be an average defender behind the home and we all know what he can do with the bat

I’m not giving up on him. Just another option to keep his bat in the lineup while also improving offense and defense

I get it, but if you get Realmuto, he will get the lion share of starts behind the plate.

No doubt Sanchez has had some real bright spots with the bat but his defense is a detriment and I don't believe his offensive drop off is physical, it's mental. Tough to fix mental. If he can be dealt with another piece to the Marlins for Realmuto I hope the deal gets done. Not a lot of drop off from Realmuto's proven offense and Sanchez' predicted output and Realmuto's defensive superiority more than makes up for any lower level offensive production than Sanchez.
