In Lefty Groves first 8 full years he threw 175 complete games.

In Bob Feller's first 8 full years he threw 184 complete games.

WHY? Ted Williams would have told us why. Kids were not taught how to throw a slider!

(But, man, you should have seen their fastballs, and big, sharp, curve balls!

They also didn't feel a need to throw every pitch max effort. Feller could throw 100, but that doesn't mean he tried to do so on every fastball. He dialed it up when he needed to.

Yep. But back in those days baseball players were deemed replaceable. They got paid next to nothing so if one of them ruined his arm it was considered the cost of doing business and the owners replaced him with another one. Grove & Feller were the exception in that their arms were strong enough that they were effective for several seasons. Now that pitchers are getting paid millions of dollars a year the owners take a lot better care of them. Now when a pitcher gets two hangnails on the same hand he's "day to day".

And I DO strongly agree with what you say about sliders. It proves that every upside has a downside.

Sliders and kids throwing too hard too early.

Lucas Giolito was throwing 100mph in high school. I can promise you he didn’t need that kind of heat to get high school hitters out. And predictably he had TJ before he graduated.

But it worked for him. He got drafted early and paid a serious upfront bonus, probably over slot.

And also probably severely shortened his career and increased his likelihood for having his second TJ before he turns 25...

It happened because the industry was dumb about this stuff.
