Just passing the time-of-day waiting for the Sox to take on the Spankees tonight!

Back in the 50's when I was still in high school, baseball umpires went to work as if they were going to a formal business meeting. The outfit included a black sports jacket, a white shirt, a dark tie and dark pants. The jacket and pants were made of wool, and the clothing requirements never changed despite the temperature.

For those Sox fans, other than Joseph Abboud, who are interested in fashion, specifically umpires attire, you'll find this site of particular interest:

That must have been fun in 90 deg heat.

I am not super interested in this topic but I have noted how umpire gear has changed over the years. They no longer have that big pad they hold up in front of them.

I think it's kind of odd that most MLB umps look out of shape compared to officials that work in other major sports.

I wish they'd go back to it. I feel like umps are unable to really get a look at outside pitches now since they no longer position themselves the way they did with the old equipment.

Well, it makes sense. Football and basketball referees do a lot of running. Hockey referees skate back and forth with the players. Baseball umpires basically crouch or stand in one place for the entire game. They might have to lightly jog to avoid a collision, but they’re not sprinting the length of the field.

The umpires do not run much, mostly stand in place watching the game until something catches them by surprise and they wake up with no worries because replay will get it right.
