Stretching is b.s., unless you need to stretch (you're a ballet dancer), or you just woke up (like a dog).

But we could probably have a debate about that, filled with self-laudatory anecdotes and condescending claims that everyone who disagrees with us is a fatso, or a moron, or has questionable sexual preferences.

I love this post.

lol.

One thing for certain.....If you really want a laugh, go early enough to a game to watch the pre-game workouts. Stretching...I am not sure a single muscle gets stretched during those things. Running....what should be a slow jog working up to at least one solid run at the end usually works out to be a barely moving jog at the end. If you pulled one of their legs out to an actual stretch, I think you could snap the thing off. Let just say it is light and leave it at that. Too much just sitting in the dugout also during the game interspersed with trips down to the buffet in the clubhouse.

David Ortiz did it right for what was really an entire career. But I will bet money that many of his teammates looked at David like he had four heads.

LOL :0 I'm slow & a little confused. Are you saying stretching out is unimportant? I'm sure you've hit a grounder & needed a quick start to dig out a single. There goes the ACL & Hammie. Quick break in for a liner in the OF. Stretching matters. Leg endurance matters.

Right?

My thinking is that stretching is both dangerous and useless (but it's pointless to argue, as I noted earlier). Leg endurance certainly matters (although hammy pulls often happen to football players , who should be in good shape, but maybe aren't? Interesting, I've almost never seen one by a basketball player or hockey player--both of whom have to be in good 'sprinting' shape; I have seen it happen to sprinters, who ought to be in great shape). When I watched Ortiz and manny, they warmed up by slow jogging--no stretching. And that's the latest recommendation I've heard. Of course, I say this as one who absolutely never stretches (here goes the 'self-laudatory anecdote' part)--I've been running, playing racket sports, golf, sailing, skating pretty much all my life (or at least, the last 60 years or so). I don't do any of them particularly well, but I've almost never been injured.

I go to games early, and often see guys stretching in pairs. If they are smart, they do build leg endurance, and to a lot of sprit - jog combinations. You are absolutely right, in that basketball, hockey, soccer & soccer players are generally speaking in much better shape. I think baseball players would be better served by staying in better overall shape, but that is tough when you are spending 5 - 6 & often more hours at the ballpark each day. It's such a grueling 162 + schedule though, so I get why most don't do this. Many ride the stationary bike, but that's a different kind of leg strength. It's good, but not the best.

Instead of 'self-serving laudatory anecdotes,' I'll take the ..... " my f***ing body is a quitter" excuse.

My wife is trying to get me to yoga with her, but I find that it just makes me angry. As I understand the practice, this is not a normal response to such physical exercise? Whatever. I just find their unrelenting calm highly irritating?

Right?

Well there has been evidence that stretching is over rated and in some cases unnecessary and even harmful.

The real problem is that men are demanding that their bodies do things that they are not suited to do.

My problem is that I am now having to demand my body to do things that it was always suited to do and that sucks. lol
