If Farrell is dumb, you could never prove it based on bringing Sale back out for the 8th having thrown just 90 pitches. Hell, he only threw 97 pitches altogether, the fewest in 10 starts this year. I might add that at that point, the beginning of the 8th inning-- the record--that is, getting 10 K's in this game--was going to be a tall order because Sale only had 6 at that point. In other words, the evidence is almost overwhelming that getting the record wasn't the primary reason to send Sale back out. As second-guessing goes, this is pretty weak and also compels you to ignore that Farrell sent out two key pinch hitters to keep that game-winning 7th inning rally alive.
