Papi has a special place in Sox history. Without him we would be nearing a 100 year drought. Foxx was a great hitter. But there really is no argument here. Ted Williams was not only the Sox greatest hitter, but arguably, the greatest hitter of all time.

Agree! When you talk about greatest hitters of all time Ted Williams name always comes up. Just think of the numbers he would have put up if not for his time in the service. Papi is the Sox Mr. October and his clutch hitting is legendary.

I may be the only one on this board who was around when Foxx was in his prime---and Teddy. I saw a lot of Papi, but only on the tube and in spring training. . I have to include their fielding as a tie-breaker, Papi and Tedddy both were lousy fielders. Foxx had zero range at 1B, but never made errors. I he got there, he made the play. Foxx is my choice, and I admit some of that might be nostalgia. I was 11 years old during his first year with the Sox (1936) and about as avid and impressionable as as kid that age can be.

I hope you keep posting. I grew up when ted was entering the late stages of his career. Obviously, I go with Ted. I know how much all of these teams of the late 50's and 60's meant to me so it does me good to hear from someone who actually saw the guys from mid to late 30's and 40's play. Good for you!

I hear you. My son, Eric, was born in 1953, and there was no way in hell I would ever try and convince him that Foxx was a better hitter than either Ted. In the mid to late fifties, I worked for a company down in Norwood. The highway whatever that was. Two blocks down the street was a lounge that carried some afternoon games on their little TV over the bar. 2 other guys and I pleaded for 1 o'clock lunch time. We'd scoot down the road, watch Teddy's first at bat then go back to work. When it came to "color" Ted won hands down!

And thank you for your comment. I'd love keep posting (or anything else for tat matter!)

Mal,

I didn't see either Foxx or the Splendid ... I honor them with the feeling and fervor folks felt and shared back when I first became aware of baseball in 1962 (most of the previous 6 years, I spent over 7500 miles away in Darjeeling and western Bengal, which happened to be my first 6 years I tread om this globe.) As I learned to play the game in the sandlots of Rochester, NH, there was almost a level of deity ascribed to Teddy. My hero became Yaz, no surprise, eh?

As a huge Big Papi fan, even with his centrality to three WS titles, I think Teddy is still king of the hill, when we are thinking solely of hitting.
