I imagine I'm not the only one who was been confused by Farrell's stance on Victorino absolutely being the starting RF on opening day even after Rusney got healthy. It seemed like a life-time achievement award for a guy who really isn't ever going to be considered a sock when people look back on his career. So today I had an idea. What if Farrell is adamant that Victorino is our starting RF because the season starts in Philly? What if he just wants Victorino to have one more opening day in the ballpark where he spent a lot of good years? Then once the Sox get to New York, or back home, he moves Victorino to the platoon role that makes a lot more baseball sense? I'd love to hear if anyone think's theres any validity to this.

And full disclosure, I'm sick of spring ball and am out of things to talk about. So this is what I got.

I think veteran ballplayers do not believe a guy should be supplanted due to injury. They want the guy to lose the gig on the field. I think that is all Farrell was doing was backing up the incumbents. Farrell does not want to hurt the guy's trade value or undercut him in front of his mates. I take what gets said with a giant block of salt here.

Rusney has a long season to try to supplant Vic. I don't see anything wrong with erring on the side of the veteran at the outset. If nothing else that's a policy that increases our functional depth.

Castillo's done everything he's supposed to to keep himself in mind if an opening shows up in the outfield. That's all he can do, it's all down to luck and making the most of his chances,.

If Vic does not produce for whatever reason he will be replaced soon enough.

Castillo will get his chance and if he produces Vic will be done as a full time player in Boston.

It's too bad but hey, that's life in the big leagues.

I still want Vic to come back healthy but I don't see it happening.

He's looking very good right now. No grimaces. He seems pain free and in good condition.

If that is the case, he is a pretty good proven player I'd say. Castillo will get his chance soon enough to show what he can do, We have all seen what a healthy Victorino can do day in and day out at the major league level. If Castillo ever plays as well or better, I guess we are talking an all-star future for him someday. I'm very much in favor of a team playing its beat players. Victorino is one of their best players when healthy. Certainly their best outfielder. Castillo is fascinating for sure but we have seen what Victorino can do.

Sox need 2013 Victorino. If they get 2014 version then Castillo will get the job. I do think regardless what Victorino does this season it will be Castillo's job in 2016.
