Good to see Whitley give us a good, albeit short, debut. Looks like Girardi didn't really trust him with 2 runners on in the 5th. That being said, Whitley really is a stretched out reliever at this point anyway. But Dellin Betances was in f***ing beast mode. 6K covering 7 batters. 39K in 22.1IP or 15.7K/9IP. Insane

Beltran just needs to get the surgery and be an option for us for the stretch run. We've already learned our lesson in beating around the bush.

Probably true. And it's not the worst thing for them, either. It'll give them more flexibility for Tex and Jeter with the DH spot, and Zoilo is a pretty good option against right handed pitchers.

Well I was hoping for a split today, but I also didn't expect the second game to be winnable -- so that makes this a little bit more frustrating than I anticipated. But the good news is that Nuno had a nice bounce back outing.

He had a very good outing. Sucks that today was a DH, though. Otherwise Aceves and Thornton wouldn't have been allowed to lose this game. There's still hope, though. Melamcon is their closer and he turtles at Yankee stadium

Yeah, no Betances or Warren definitely hurt them. I question Joe's decision to use Betances for two innings yesterday, in a three run game, against the non-middle of the order, with a double header looming. Also a bit curious to use Warren to start the 8th in a four run game. Without Kelley being that aggressive with your other trustworthy relievers can really come back to bite you. And in this case, it definitely did.

It's time to either look externally for a lefty reliever or promote Bleich from within

I think the biggest issue is that Joe continues to put Thornton in situations where he has to face righties.

Hence why we need a lefty who can get lefties out, but isn't a total trainwreck vs righties. Girardi loves metric. How bout these...

2014-

Slash vs Lefties- .263/.333/.263, OPS against of .596. Not too bad, could do better, but tolerable

Slash vs Righties- .400/.538/.500, OPS of 1.038. Incredibly bad. He cannot face a righty unless we are up by 5 or down by 5. Just cannot happen.

And if he wants validation beyond 1/4 season, look at last yr too. There was a near 200 point difference in OPS against between righties and lefties.

Sabathia has a chronic degenerative condition in his knee, which will keep him out for at least 6 weeks. If he doesn't respond to stem cell therapy, he'll need season ending surgery. Well, it could be worse, he could be pitching. We can get by in the short term, but long term, we cannot replace Pineda, CC and Nova. Phelps has been serviceable. Nuno has been hit or miss. We don't know what we have in Whitley. But we need to get Pineda back and we need at least one more veteran arm out there. I honestly feel we will deal for Samardzija, but if we do it now, we're gonna get raped

He should be back in the bigs by second week in June. He's already throwing pen sessions and will likely have a few rehab starts.
He's having a hat mad from pine tar rags.

Nobody seems to give the Yankees credit for building the bullpen from within. Their closer, David Robertson, is a former draftee. They treated an international free-agent in Abraham Almonte for our setup man, Shawn Kelley. Our other set up man, Adam Warren, was a draftee. He has been one of the best relievers and baseball to this point. And Dellin Betances, another Yankee draftee, has quite possibly been the best reliever in baseball to this point. His xFIP of 1.17 is better than Kimbrall's and Uehara's. And that's not all. There are a ton more relief prospects ready. What the Yankees were unable to do in the draft due to their draft position, they have made up for it and picking value picks.

I have to agree. The bullpen has been much better than I expected.

It seems extremely early to give them such glowing accolades. They have done extremely well, but the league has not adjusted to most of them yet.

What I do commend the Yankees on is taking all these prospects and putting them into the pen. Teams tend to let their prospects waste away as bad starters who get shelled before converting them to relief roles. Sometimes it feels like the game is still run by the old guys who don't believe relief pitching is actually part of baseball.

We came into this yr with 6 starters. Phelps was relegated to pen work, even though he didn't allow a ST run. Pineda was too good to leave off. So, we had to move Warren to the pen, even though he was a highly successful starter in the minors. Betances was a failed starter in the minors, but with him focusing solely on the stretch and 2 pitches, he's found himself. The rub now is that 3 starters are on the shelf, one for the rest of the yr and another who was lost before being injured in CC. We need starters now, and there is a rumor that the Yankees will stretch out Warren. I think that is complete folly, IMO. Our pen is the reason why we are outperforming our pythag. Yes, our pen ERA isn't stellar, but the guys who are tasked with holding leads have been near perfect. Kelley is coming off the DL shortly and he's been dominant sans his last appearance when he hurt himself. But the depth in the minors is unreal.

Jose Ramirez is a starter who couldn't stay healthy. They moved him to the pen after he hurt himself in ST. He throws near 100mph with a nasty changeup. He's got closer stuff

Danny Burawa has been a reliever all the way. He throws near 100 with a good slider. He's got closer stuff, but has issues with command

Mark Montgomery is a guy who sits 90-94 with the best slider in the system. His K rates through the minors have been insane, although his command can use work too.

Branden Pinder throws high 90s with a wipeout slider that he has found again. He's got closer stuff

Those are the guys at AAA only. They have high end pen arms in their system. So if someone falters, they have more coming
