For the record, if you look at Nava's splits vs. lefties, Gomes has a higher OBP.

Nava vs. lefties .244/.327/.390/.717 (41 AB's)

Nava vs. righties .306/.418/.491/.909 (108 AB's)

Gomes vs. lefties .160/.333/.340/.673 (50 AB's)

I guess the point is that Nava is much better against righties, which is why he'd bat 2nd, but vs. lefties I think it's better to put Gomes earlier and Nava towards the middle. Also 5/8 of Gomes hits vs. lefties are extra bases whereas only 2/10 of Navas hits vs. lefties are for extra bases.

Well, why hit Gomes 2nd? The only thing he's good for is power. Hit him behind Napoli.

Because the only thing he's been good for this year is getting on base. He's second on the team in OBP against lefties so he's put at the top of the order, where he belongs.

Red Sox activate Morales, demote Aceves

Posted by Matt Pepin, Boston.com Staff May 28, 2013 05:05 PM

Clay Buchholz will be re-inserted into the rotation on Friday when the Red Sox travel to New York to face the Yankees after being scratched before his scheduled start on Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies with irritation in his collarbone.

He initially felt the pain upon returning to Boston after his most recent start in Chicago on May 22. It was determined to be irritation in his right AC joint. The decision to sit Buchholz was precautionary, not wanting to turn a minor early-season issue into something that lingered throughout the season.

He threw his normal bullpen session on Saturday and played catch and long toss on Monday.

“He continues to improve,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell. “Right now we have every intention of him starting Friday in New York.”

Franklin Morales, who’s been out since spring training with injuries to his back and pectoral muscle, was activated and Alfredo Aceves, who pitched six one-run innings in Monday’s 9-3 win over the Phillies, was sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

After going five innings his rehab start with the Portland Sea Dogs last Thursday, Morales will work out of the bullpen.

“It would have been his normal day to start on rehab today and given the last three starts that Ryan's gone through, we felt like we needed a multi-inning reliever out there in the pen,” Farrell said. “That's where Franklin comes in to us.”

Shane Victorino and Will Middlebrooks are both on tract to be activated once their respective stints on the disabled list are up. Victorino (hamstring) will be available June 5 and Middlebrooks (low back spasms) will be available June 8. Both will go on rehab assignments before they return. Victorino’s could start as soon as this weekend,

“Both look to be on track to be activated upon their availability,” Farrell said. “So everything's trending the right way as far as their recover and we'll look to get each on a rehab assignment before that.”

Heading into a National League ballpark for the first time this season Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia, the Red Sox will likely make another move Tuesday night, adding an extra position player. Jackie Bradley is the likely candidate for the call-up, though Farrell said it hasn't been finalized.

Since being sent to Triple-A Bradley Jr. has hit .360 with two home runs and nine RBIs, playing all three outfield positions, but was placed on the disabled list May 4 with biceps tendinitis. Since returning on May 17, he’s hit .438 (14 for 32) with a home run and six RBIs eight games.

“Once he got past the shoulder tendinitis and got back on the field ... He's been swinging the bat pretty well,” Farrell said.

He would not be used every day, Farrell said.

"If he were to come back it would be as an extra outfielder," he said.

Yes! Buchholz back in on Friday! That gives us a chance against CC. Good to see Morales back, sad to see Alfredo go after last night. Hope to see JBJ again tomorrow and Thursday.

Reason #2693 why David Ortiz is only a DH: He can't even handle the ceremonial first pitch.

I would be interested in knowing the first 2692.

Well don't you agree?

He had a great game last night, no question about it - even though the defense bailed him out on several occasions.

But I still can't stand Aceves as a person. And he was facing a terrible offense. And I'm not sure he can sustain that level of play, even if you simply keep him in the pen.
