Actually... Look at his recent stats. He isn't that much different than Aviles, who will be earning about 2 million in arbitration this year.

It seems to make Farrell look 8 million dollars more expensive. Sure hope he is really their guy.

High value, but the length is what makes it worthwhile. They're one pitcher away from being a contender.
I agree. Maybe the pitcher will be Jurjens or Marcum. I'd still like to get a part time 1B/OF with a lefty bat-- maybe Berkman.

I think this deal reveals a big lack of confidence in Iglesias making it as a ML offensive player. I wonder if Iglesias will be the backup or will it be Ciriaco?

Don't be too shocked if the backup is Drew. His recent numbers don't reflect anyone I'd start over someone else without a fight in camp.

Underwhelmed. I recognize the options were limited but I'm not going to pretend I expect great things here.

Drew is going to be in opening day. On the other hand Ciriaco should be the back up and Iglesias the number 3 option.

Iggy will very likely be traded. With one of the B's flying up his butt they had this year to figure Iggy out and decided they already had it figured out. Looks like see ya' Iggy to me.

Drew is going to be the full time starting SS and its not even close.

Define "full time."

If the team was convinced he'd be worth the time and money, it wouldn't be a 1 year deal. This is a gamble. Could pay off brilliantly, or he could get hurt in Spring Training and never see a pitch in a Boston uniform. Just don't pretend that we can expect to see more than about 100 games of Stephen Drew, if that. And if it turns out to be less than 80, then "full time" is at least a stretch. And if he hits for crap and can't defend the position, and another option makes itself sufficiently viable, I expect to see this gamble abandoned by late June.

This isn't a signing they're going to try to count on to contend. What this signing signifies is that the Red Sox are willing to eat some money experimenting until we're ready to contend again. Which is the right move, since experimenting landed us David Ortiz. On the other hand, it also landed us John Smoltz. Two sides of that particular coin.

Point here being, people need to not read too much into this signing fron a trying-to-contend standpoint. Yes they areat least failing to wave the white flag right out of Spring, but this signing will ultimately be judged by the fact that it was worth a shot, and if we get 1 year of a decent shortstop out of it, so much the better.

Ciriaco becomes the backup and I think Iggy becomes trade bait.

Show me one good reason why they should trade Iglesias with this injury magnet starting at the shortstop position.

I mean if you'd said "Iglesias becomes absolutely essential depth at a position we've tried desperately to fill since Nomar's time" I would have let it go, but the idea that we can trade Iglesias because we have A Starting Shortstop And One Backup is ludicrous. History suggests otherwise. Heck, that's why we kept Ciriaco around last year and that turned out to be the right decision, to put it mildly.

This is an interesting way of looking at it.

I don't think Drew would have signed without the assurance that he will be the starting SS.

He's had 2 seasons of over 800 OPS .

He's dipped a bit recently due to his injury.

If he's fully recovered I wouldn't be schocked if returns to a 800 OPS player

Drew's been injured the past two years, before that he was one of the best hitting SS, I think the upside is way higher than it would be with Aviles. In addition this money would probably be unspent and since it's for just a year I'm not sure it makes sense to tack it on to Farrell's cost.

Um. He had 1 traumatic injury. He's not a chronic injury guy like you make it seem.

2 years is a long time guys.

It was 1 injury that started at the end of 2011 and lagged into 2012.

He didn't play his first game in 2012 until June 27th.

It's not like he got hurt, played in September of 2011, then started 2012 in April, got hurt again, etc like you make it sound.
