Beat my thread by mere seconds. Not thrilled-- hoping that the Red Sox didn't pay something ridiculous, like the reported rumors of Barnes or Bard.

I'd be shocked, beyond shocked actually, if they dealt Barnes or Bard. I'd say it's going to be more along the lines of Carpenter + Linares.

I'm actually very excited about this. I think the Sox made the right move here. Farrell is going to be a fantastic manager in Boston. And the players already love him. It's a great fit, and he's going to do very well.

I'm thrilled that he's back with the Sox.

I'm not sure about Farrell. I would've loved Tony Pena. I'm sure Farrell will do just fine. Let's just hope Benny Boy made a good move for the compensation.

If management sent Bard or Barnes, I'm flying the next 747 out of Logan straight into Fenway.

We send Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays. I HATE THIS

This honestly doesn't bother me... Aviles was clearly not part of the future of this team. He is a bellow average player.

Lets just say I had a little man crush on Aviles. He played AAA ball in Omaha we had a couple of good conversations. Great guy.

Well I am was neither a Farrell for Manager fan or an Aviles at SS fan. However, Mike is not chop liver. He was/is a serviceable utility player and probably could have netted back a serviceable utility player in trade or been made part of a package deal.

On the one hand that may sound like a big who cares but I am struggling with Farrell on two counts:

I really don't want somebody part of the recent past of this Red Sox organization for one. For another, Farrell has not proved out as a Manager.

Now I suppose it is possible that Farrell could be the next BB (bust as head coach in Cleveland, becomes monster head coach in NE).

Plus as I had posted earlier this smacks of another no process process by the Sox. They wanted Farrell, put up a facade of having done some amount of due diligence while in fact doing none. These guys are just itching to be the worst organization in baseball. They already might be the most phony baloney organization in baseball.

I'm fine with this. They have their manager, they didn't lose anyone who was going to be part of the future (i.e., starting SS for the next Sox World Series team). Aviles seems reasonable.

That said, he will still have the chance to screw the Sox over about 18 times a season, but hopefully the Farrell hire will be worth it.

"great guy" doesn't mean he's a high caliber player. Definitely below average. Good bye Aviles, you'll be forgotten soon.

Red Sox clearly will not be competitive next year... inless they pull a "Brad Pitt" like the Ahtletics.

not having a medium SS in Aviles isn't a big deal. Who cares if we lose 88 games or 120? If the Red Sox lose 145 games I'm happy for the draft picks.

Bust in Clev, great start in NE, but has not met expectations since getting busted in 2007. He buys the groceries, cooks the meal, but the meal tastes bitter.

Its done now so it hardly matters. Hopefully Farrell learned something in Toronto. There is every chance that it turns out to be a BB/Pats kind of thing as I posted above.

I am just so tired of the Sox putting up some front like they are actually going through some process of pairing down candidates when they are obviously doing nothing of the sort.

Best advice for Farrell comes from Betty Davis..."Fasten your seat belts......its going to be a bumpy night".

Tell me this. Who would you rather have at SS Aviles or Iglesias?

Looks like Iglesias is going to be our SS unless we make a deal or pick someone up this off season.

The real interesting thing to me out of this is the SS. Makes me wonder if there are plans in the works to bring someone in. I can't possibly think they are considering Iggy as ready for a starting role. It can be debated that he could develop with the bat.... but he clearly is not ready for the bigs right now.

Dealing Aviles is better than moving even a mediocre prospect. I'm fine with Iggy/Ciriaco hitting 9th.

At least the manager has been picked and they can now work on the roster. Now get 2 SP's, move Salty, get a new catcher, sign Ross and give him a 1b mitt, and get another corner OF.

As I said in a different thread, I don't know if Farrell is the best hire. We'll find out. The ownership is in love with the guy, and they've had plenty of exposure to him, so I think we need to trust that, being relatively smart people, they're making a well-informed, quality decision there.

With respect to compensation, goodness, how can anyone be upset with it being Aviles? He's a useful utility guy, but not a guy who should be a MLB starter. I was worried that a good prospect would be going to Toronto.

And getting back Lind? Serious splits, a guy with good power, but not good at getting on base. He's a guy with whom you construct a platoon.

Career splits:

vs RHP: .282/.335/.502/.836

vs LHP: .220/.264/.343/.607

So he plays vs. RHP and you need a guy to play 1b vs. LHP. Could Jerry Sands, already in the organization, be that guy? In limited playing time, here are his career MLB splits:

vs RHP: .204/.301/.289/.589

vs LHP: .316/.372/.532/.904

Here's Lind's contract:

2013: $5 mil

2014: $7 mil (team option; $2m buyout)

2015: $7.5 mil (team option; $1m buyout)

2016: $8 mil (team option; $500k buyout)

So if they really don't like Lind, they live with him for 2013, then buy him out for 2014, and the whole experience costs them $7 million. Given that they now have plenty of money to work with, this represents no problem whatsoever.

And it means that, if they went with the platoon idea of Lind/Sands, that for about $5.5 million in 2013, they can have a 1b that produces approximately this line:

.295/.345/.515/.860, with about 25 homers and 80 rbi

Not HOF-level, but pretty useful.
