The Red Sox paid his previous Japanese team a substantial amount of money in order to negotiate with Matsuzaka. If they do not offer him a contract does any team that wants to negotiate with him have to pay the Red Sox to do so? How exactly did that work?

No, he's a free agent after his contract expires. He can talk to any team he wants.

In 2007, his rights were still owned by the Seibu Lions. The Red Sox paid money for the right to negotiate a contract with him. It's similar to a transfer in soccer.

This. Will be glad when he finally leaves, once and for all.

I had such high hopes for him, back in the day... but he just never panned out. He wouldn't be a bad reliever, but he would cost too much.

He would be an awful reliever. He allows too many base runners and can't throw strikes.

He pitches batting practice tomorrow night for the $pankees. Dice-K don't let the door hit you on the way out. Watching him pitch over the last few seasons is like going to the dentist.

What a way to go out, getting lit up by the Yankees, goodbye forever Dice-K.

It's certainly looking like that's what it will be.. The getting lit up part I mean

Feel like the Sox really did dice a disservice tossing him out there tonight. He has no idea what he is doing with the baseball post TJ. Arm angle all over the place...just a complete mess. It can take a long while for a guy with multiple pitches to come back from TJ.

Tough to watch dice walk off the field. Sure there is much to admire and like about the life of a big league ballplayer but when you see that much disappointment etched into such a young face, you get to see the other end of it as well. OK, hard to have sympathy for the guy. I realize that. But just think about how much of a life like that has been totally devoted to reaching the pinnacle of his craft and how difficult it is to stay their competing with guys that have made the same commitment.

I do think the dice experiment, really calls into question bringing pitchers in from Japan and expecting them to succeed here. The baseball culture is different in Japan. That much is obvious. Simply do not think they are prepared for the level of competition we have here and then you add the impact from the DH on the MLB version of the game.

As my 7 year old son and i got ready to watch the game i told him how this was a great

day because this was the last time we would ever have to watch dice-k pitch.

His reponse-"what about Lackey?"
