It might just be me but for people getting suspended in Sports for "slurs" is ridiculous

tu ere maricon - translated loosely - you are fagot.... im not homophobic but

fagot - defined as - fag·ot   [fag-uht]

noun

1. a bundle of sticks, twigs, or branches bound together and used as fuel, a fascine, a torch, etc.

2. a bundle; bunch.

3. a bundle of pieces of iron or steel to be welded, hammered, or rolled together at high temperature.

Granted it was probably meant in a derogatory way, I dont think Yunel Escobar should get fined or suspended by speaking his mind, so maybe he doesnt like gay people who really cares, freedom of speech and freedom to express oneself has been thrown out the window by over sensitive people now days :thumbdown

Anyways I hope he contests his suspension, what does everyone else think about suspending people for "slurs"

Clubhouses have always been crude places. not for the feint of heart. I remember hearing Phil Rizzuto tell stoties about how Casey Stengel had referred to him as the "Little Dago" and DiMaggio as the "Big Dago." It was no big deal. Of course, they were smart enough not to say those things in interviews or for public consumption, and the press knew that it stayed in the clubhouse. Nothing would have happened in this case either. I am sure that is probably a common insult in the locker room. He had to be disciplined, because the idiot wrote it on his face.

Agreed he is an idiot for writing it on his face, but still, he should not be suspended for such petty things if he was to verbally "assault" an individual in the public by calling him a fagot than maybe but for a general statement posted below his eyes, for all we know thats how he pumps himself up, maybe hes calling himself that so he remembers not to be one lol either way. Society has changed sports so much in the last decade that its disgusting to see athletes have to hide how they really feel bout situations.

"Remind himself not to be one?" Because...what, gay people can't play baseball well? I'm not sure what your point is there.

Suspending him is not stupid. When he is on the field wearing the Blue Jays uniform, he represents the Blue Jays. If I showed up to a job at McDonalds with "You're a N*****" written on my shirt, I would be fired, and rightfully so. The dude wrote a slur on HIS FACE while he was going to be on national television, representing the Toronto Blue Jays and Major League Baseball. In order to remind him that he works for them and they don't tolerate that crap, they suspended him.

As for society changing, I agree. It is disgusting that society has changed so that it is no longer socially acceptable to insult and berate gay people in public without being stigmatized. Somehow I get the feeling if it was a vicious racial slur written there everyone would be whistling a different tune.

So he meant " you are a bundle of sticks"?.... HMMMM interesting.

Nobody gets paid to appear on the field in a uniform representing something larger and greater than himself to speak his own mind or express himself in any other way other than using his basebasll skills.

100 percent positive that he didn't mean "you are a bundle of sticks." The first amendment protection doesn't apply to the Blue Jays, because they aren't the government, and they aren't even in the United States.

Really stupid, and it makes sense why the Braves dumped him for a reliever.

Who first noticed it and called attention to it causing the stink anyway? I think that MLB don't give 2 shits about the maricone line, I think they want to make sure that the practice of eye black writing doesn't spread to some other ******* that sells the rights to his eye black to Viagra, Adidas or anybody else they don't get to collect a fee from.

It was pretty much immediately. Escobar was said to have caught a 'flu' and didn't played Sunday.

Their GM almost waned to suspend him a year or released him. I would if i were a GM.

if I did that, I'd lose my job. I know better and he should have as well, hopefully he's learned that derogatory statements based on creed, sexual orientation, race, etc... es no bueno. Good for MLB for suspending him.
