Dodgers get Hanley Ramirez in deal with Marlins

Seeking to revive a stagnant offense, the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired third baseman Hanley Ramirez and reliever Randy Choate from the Miami Marlins in exchange for pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and a minor leaguer, a source familiar with the trade said late Tuesday night.

Ramirez will play shortstop for the Dodgers in the short term until Dee Gordon recovers from a torn thumb ligament, then move to third base.

The trade is the second in two days for the underachieving Marlins, who dealt second baseman Omar Infante and pitcher Anibal Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Ramirez, 28, is batting .246 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs for the Marlins. He was moved off shortstop this winter, when the Marlins acquired Jose Reyes in an attempt to remake the club in its inaugural season at Marlins Park. The rebuild has not worked.

The Dodgers believe the skilled Ramirez will benefit from the change of scenery and recapture the form that made the three-time All-Star one of the National League’s better players at the end of the last decade. They will assume all of Ramirez’s contract, or about $38 million through the 2014 season.

Choate, a veteran left-hander, has a 2.49 ERA in 44 appearances for the Marlins.

The Marlins, who received top-rated pitching prospect Jacob Turner from the Tigers, continued to rework their pitching staff. Eovaldi is a 22-year-old right-hander who was 1-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 10 starts for the Dodgers. From Nolan Ryan’s hometown of Alvin, Texas, Eovaldi was one of the team’s premier prospects.

Too bad the Dodgers couldn't unload that useless tub of lard, Juan Uribe, on the Marlins...

You have got to be kidding me. How the heck do the Dodgers get this guy for essentially a mid level prospect?

Eovaldi basically is just a hard throwing prospect that nibbles all the time, and doesn't have any control over his secondary pitches at times. I think the NL West hid his ineptitude. And he nets them Hanley? No other team put anything better than this guy? He reminds me a lot of how Hagadone was viewed before we dealt him. That guy with high velocity, young, successful, but needs to find secondary pitches to really evolve. We know how that turned out for the Guardians. I find it appalling that we didn't offer a better prospect. He would've been perfect in Fenway, and for the time being atleast solved the SS problem. Hell, I don't even understand the fuss about the contract. If he was a free agent right now, I guarantee you, he'd make more money, for more years.

I think it's a TERRIBLE deal by the Marlins, on par with when they gave away Miggy for Andrew and Maybin.

I can't say I'm surprised, they were obviously going to deal him considering how poorly they have played, and also given the Marlin's preference to be able to pay their players in Chuck E. Cheese tokens and pats on the back. I figured they'd get a little more than this, though. One prospect seems like a steal for LA.

Did they really have the chance. Miami was up here scouting Crawford. Maybe that is where the deal fell apart. Crawford's elbow may blow up at any time and I were watching him play, there is not much I could point to that would make me want Crawford.

Wow! They traded HanRam for a bucket of s***. Eovaldi sucks. I have been watching this guy this season. He would fit perfect on oir staff. He walks tons of batters and sucks. Miami gets a new stadium and they spent a lot of money, but the whole thing is blowing up in their faces.
