Probably' date=' but honestly it may have been the best move for the team to have sent Middlebrooks back to Triple A (I'm going to get crushed for saying that) and let Youk try to find his swing without the pressure of the kid sitting on the bench... It might have back fired, but more than likely Youk would have started to hit like he his now, and they would have gotten a nice package back for him.[/quote']

Youk wasn't going to work in Boston. Not with BobbyV and all the drama. The reason he's playing so well is because he's relaxed, largely in part because of a change of scenery, but also because of a new manager who is much more laid back.

It sucks, but that's just how it works a lot of times.

Besides, Youk has a .873 OPS for the ChiSox. Middlebrooks has an .881 OPS for the Red Sox.

If production is a wash, give me the younger player who didn't have offseason surgery and hasn't been hurt in each of the last 3 years.

At the time, Middlebrooks was absolutely on fire. He was also this team's top prospect, so it wasn't like a no-namer coming in, he was someone who clearly was going to be a part of the team's future, and he was taking the position and making it his own.

Youkilis had fallen off a cliff. He'd had long and intensive injuries for the last few years, and he never seemed like he adjusted well at third base. Adrian Gonzalez played nearly 20 games in RF, and it was killing the team defensively. Youki was also part of the "toxic clubhouse".

If they had wanted to give up on the year, then maybe letting him rebuild his value was their best bet, but if they wanted to compete, he was not the right decision at 3B.

Even if Youk wins the MVP. It was the right move at the time.

......and another K by Ross.

Youk is still a .900 OPS player... Shame on the Red Sox for not trying everything possible to get him going and increase his value before the trading deadline.

What pisses me off about Youkilis is he was hitting like crap for 3 weeks in Boston, gets traded for a bag of beans, and suddenly regains his form in Chicago. Apparently he was pouting in Boston about Bobby Vs big mouth. That was not very professional of him.

The media, predictably, doesn't say a word about this. They are focussed on the Youks vs V soapsuds.

I say shame on Youks.:thumbdown

Based on what?

His 162 game "projection" is 21 HR.

He will not hit 30 HR, and trust me....Ive already won 2, almost 3 of these bets with a member of this board [Ross (20 this year, pending), Agon (30 last year), Agon (25 this year)].

Based on the same freaking logic that you used when you said Dunn is on pace to hit 54. Hypocritical much?

I said Salty is on track to hit 30+. 17 HR in 71 games is on a pace for 32 in 135 games.

Dunn averages 38 HR a year. Dunn has hit 40+ homers 5 times.

Salty has 17 HR, and its a career high.

Stop comparing Salty to Dunn.

......and as I type, he strikes out again HA!

Some of it has to be an adrenaline rush or something...it's not the first time a guy has suddenly turned it on after getting traded.

He hadn't fallen off a cliff as much as he never had that much of a chance this season... 165 off and on plate appearances is not enough to judge whether or not a player has fallen off a cliff.

I think the toxic clubhouse is media nonsense, I don't believe there is too much too that.

If the Red Sox had kept Youk in the lineup, do you honestly believe the record would be much better? I don't... I think they would be about .500, maybe better if Youk picked it up. Not having Youk or Middlebooks for that Yankees series really hurt the team. Middlebrooks has missed a bunch of time since the deal, and Youk has played everyday and played well. (not saying he would have here, but it is a possibility.)

So the last thing I will say about this is that had the Red Sox given Youk another full time chance, they would probably be in a similar position and they might be able to have dealt him for a better package.

Just my opinion... it's impossible to say what would have happened, but to discount this possibility is foolish.

Both of these guys are so hittable if they are up at all in the zone but both have for the most part kept it down or had the ball hit right at somebody.

Oh God I wish Ciriaco was swinging at that first pitch....that was an extra base hit ball
