It's math.

If you score more runs, you pitching doesn't have to be as good. Not sure how that doesn't computer.

Just because they're scoring a lot of runs now doesn't mean they won't score even more runs later.

More runs = More wins. Just like if the SP allowed fewer runs, that would equate to less wins.

And by the way, over the past 2 months, the Sox pitchers have thrown to a 3.73 ERA, and the Sox hitters have averaged 5.00 Runs per Game.

The Red Sox are also 28-17 in their past 45 games. Thats .622 baseball, and a 101 win pace.

Do the Sox need another SP? Certainly. Can they make the PS with what they've got? Absolutely.

Lester has had a combination of throwing like s*** AND getting unlucky on the games where he throws well. Buchholz had a horrendous start but has really shined recently (3.23 ERA over his past 7 starts). They'll be fine. Let's relax.

It is a matter of math, I agree. How many more runs per game do you think that the return of Ellsbury and Crawford are going to produce? Don't forget that one of them is going to replace Nava, who has exceled. Do you think that either Ellsbury or Crawford will do better than .313/.902? And once both of them are playing again Ross and Sweeney will likely platoon in RF, so we lose some of Ross's production when Sweeney plays (.278/.915 vs Sweeney's .292/.733) Don't think that Sweeney will just sit on the bench, nor will whoever our 5th OF. There may be more runs scored; maybe not. I suspect we will get a few more, sure, but not many. On the other hand we are still stuck with mediocrity with Beckett, Lester, Buchholtz and less than mediocrity with DiceK and Doubront. An ace pitcher would make a real difference in our chances, but not Ellsbury and Crawford.

On crawford:

Carl Crawford will continue his rehab assignment with Triple A Pawtucket tomorrow. He revealed that the PRP injection in his left elbow did not really help his partially torn ligament but that he has learned to throw adequately.

"It's not 100 percent healthy but I'm able to hit," he said. "The elbow, there are still some issues. I've been making some throws down in the minor leagues, good enough to hit the cutoff man. I don't know if I'll be hosing anybody out at home or anything like that. But I think it's strong enough to hit the cutoff man if I can to the ball quick enough to stop the guys from advancing."

It sounds like Crawford could need surgery come the offseason.

So, let me get this straight. He sat out almost 3 extra months and the elbow has not improved and he can play with it the way it is. My question that is burning my ass: Why the f*** did he miss the 3 months if he could play with this? I was very vocal about this injury originally. There have been plenty of sore armed outfielders. If it didn't hurt his offense, he should have been playing. He can go f*** himself. Really, this pisses me off in a big way. If he had lied and said the elbow had healed, I'd have felt much better about this.

Do you think this was his call? I'm hopeful that his elbow has improved from its original state from earlier in the season. If it is the same, then I'm completely with you.

PeteAbe Crawford's rehab assignment has been suspended. He has a groin strain.

Get this ice princess some icecream, it's pretty hot outside.

Honestly, who cares at this point? As long as Ellsbury's rehab is progressing, that's what matters.

Crawford is a classic case of mismanagement. If they leave him rotting in the minors any longer, he's liable to get a career-ending injury. Maybe that's what they want. :)

Actually I agree with the above comment about CC...who cares...I am done with him....maybe the worst investment of Sox resources in the entire history of the team.....as long as Ells is on the way back I am good with that. If and when CC comes back this year....fine...if not....fine. Who gives a s***.

Carl Crawford was pulled off his (elbow, wrist) rehab assignment due to a mild left groin strain.

Crawford's rehab clock will be reset and he won't be eligible to return for at least five days. Prior to the setback, he was expected to rejoin the Red Sox shortly after the All-Star break, but his return will obviously be delayed now. We'll know more about how far this will set him back after the team addresses the media later Saturday.

Abraham just said that Crawford is saying that the elbow does not feel ANY better than it did. I am so f***ing done with this Crawford s*** yet we are not done with it cause it still is likely the last nail in the Ells coffin making it a virtual certainty that the Sox will not come up with the goods to retain Ells out of FA.

They probably shouldn't keep Ells though. Bradley is almost ready and will cost a fraction of the price. The whole Crawford situation is so damn disappointing. There really needs to be a contract clause that gives teams some ability to escape horrible contracts when the player literally can't get on the field. In the NBA they have something like that. It's one thing if the player is just bad, but it's another if they literally can't get on the field. Hell, even something forcing the team to pay 25% of his contract would be a relief and ensure Crawford wouldn't go hungry. Geez.

If Crawford needs surgery to ever get completely healed again then they need to do it NOW. There is still a 100 mil investment in this guy after this season so it would be wise to get him in the best position to be at least somewhat productive for the remaining 5 years. Just call this season a bust and let Nava/Ross man the COF slots and get Crawford ready for 2013.

This. The Red Sox have had serious medical issues over the last few years, and it is pretty clear to me why:

They wait on surgery. If they KNOW something is wrong, they wait anyway. Crawford should have had surgery the minute they lost to the Orioles last year. They knew about it, but waited till April to worry about it. Pedroia's thumb has been a huge problem that has made him play like not-Pedroia.

Now these injuries that have been killing the team for months haven't even been operated on yet, and will not get better without surgery. Its just ugly.

That's what I am reading that the treatment didn't work, but he has learned to cope with it. Honestly, I don't thin this guy has any fire in his belly to get on the field for the Red Sox.

Would you? Come back to Fenway, and get booed to high hell when there is zero incentive for you to do so. Odds are, he'll play worse than whoever he ends up replacing (Nava/Sweeney).

He's gotten a major break-- people have simply forgotten about him since going on the DL, and I don't think he wants to come back, be pulled down by his injury and get hammered by the press and fans. He's in the back of my mind as someone who hasn't been particularly missed this year, and I think that's where he wants to stay until he's ready to hit the ground running.

Yes' date=' he makes a lot of money to perform. He should have an ounce of pride.[/quote']

I was half kidding about that 700. He ought to get his surgery and get back in shape to make certain he is ready for spring training.

As for how long Pedroia is out, who cares? Its better long term strategy right now to begin to lose a lot of games. IMO we would be better served by finishing in last place with a record below .500. That way there is not the slightest crack for the owners to wiggle through to make excuses. Only when the fans become apathetic enough to not care enough to go to the games any more will substantive change be forced upon the unwilling owners.

Well many of us have complained about our inept medical staff and little was done about it. Oh sure, we replaced a few of the butchers and inept bums but we kept a number of them, and the whole sorry lot had the same philosophy about what constitutes good medical practice for the players. The whole kit and caboodle should have been fired forthwith and wasn't. So we have some new people and many of the old people and the same sick and sorry take on things. How Prune Face Henry could allow himself to see his whole edifice come crashing down on him, his team and the fans and not either see it coming or having seen it, ignoring its implications. Now we are inept in the medical department, inept in the front office, and, yes, inept with a second rater like Henry in overall charge.

Although Sweeney has done an okay job. A 6'4" 240lb outfielder with 0 homers and average speed is not going to bring back much on the trade market.

Why not trade Ellsbury for pitching prospects? He has a higher market value and isn't going to be back once his contract is up anyway. Also, we ought to trade him before he is injured again and becomes untradeable.

If they don't think they can sign him long term, they should trade him, but I don't think that Cherries has the cajones to trade him.
