This is looking like it will be a very tough defeat for Bruins against Montreal tonight.

Somebody has got to step up for the Bruins when Thornton is not on the ice. The Bruins are going to lose this very important game tonight for one reason only. When the Canadian's ran at Seguin and he went down around center ice, Z Charra took it upon himself to seek out the Canadian player and teach him a lesson. Well great lesson that. Z ends up with a ten minute misconduct, two minutes for instigating and another five minutes for fighting. In the span of that seventeen minutes, the Canadians went from down by one to up by one even though the Bruins killed off the penalties. The Bruins did not survive the remaining time that Z was off the ice.

I have seen this time and time again. When Thornton is not on the ice, Z becomes the enforcer and the best defenseman in hockey can't be the enforcer. The Bruins need to figure out that when Thornton is not on the ice, somebody, anybody but Z has got to step up and get to the opposing player before Z does. If Z gets there first, forget it....he is gone for multiple minutes if not stuck with a game misconduct. The Bruins have proven over and over that they really cannot survive Charra serving multiple penalty minutes.

The problem is that for "just a 4th liner" what Thornton provides is just too rare. That guy who can skate a little, play a little, and hang with the heavies, really isn't as easy to find as all that. Julien doesn't want a conventional goon, that's well documented, but hybrids like Thornton are not a dime a dozen.

Here's what I want to know: Where the heck has Adam McQuaid been? He's the guy who should be stepping it up as the enforcer in the absence of Thornton. He's the guy who should have gone after Emelin last night. Did he lose all his power and confidence when he lost his mullet? I used to think this guy had some sneaky potential, but now I'm not sure.

McQuaid or even Lucic....I would give up a few minutes of Lucic before seeing Z leave the ice. Heck Lucic is usually meandering over to the penalty box anyway. McQuaid definitely needs to step it up. Jeez Campbell will step in before McQuaid will.

Darth Quaider gunshy from the concussion he had?

I'm not sure Luc is smart enough to pick his spots.

For a regular season game, it's fine that Z made a scene. It'll help in the long run. What he should have done is pick up Pacioretty and threw him into thecrowd ala Thunderlips in Rocky 3.

Couple really sparkling defensive plays in a row by Tyler Seguin last night to preserve Tuukka's shutout.

Tuukka came out of his net to knock the puck out of danger and prevent a shorthanded 1 on the goaltender, but pushed the puck to Maxim Talbot, who drove past him to the net, but Seguin, soon as he saw his own net was open, was flying in to cover, and was able to "stack the pads" and make a save, That puck was going wide unless it changed direction, but with a couple Flyers around the net and pretty much only Seguin back (Krejci is in the picture, but did not seem to anticipate Talbot intercepting Rask's clear and is trailing the play), he still needs to stop that puck or change its direction or it's going in.

Then when a Flyer recovers the puck, Seguin, still on his knees, is able to get his stick in there and slow him down, prevent a wraparound second chancer and allow Rask time to get back into his crease.

Kid's really starting to put it together defensively, Would not be surprised to see him centering his own line in the near future. He's maybe still got some polishing to do, but this kid gets it.

Did he definitely prevent a goal? I'm not 100% sure of that, but he definitely took the edge off of 2 potentially glorious scoring chances and in my book that still rates some serious props.

So I have to ask, at what point do the Bruins decide to give a bigger role to Anton Khudobin?

Of all the times the Bruins have coughed up the lead in the third, I'd have to look back but if I recall correctly, none of them is a Khudo game.

Of course this is me suggesting this so YMM obviously V, but if Tuukka is going to do the Luongo thing, I might be inclined to see if what Kudo is showing is something he can sustain over multiple consecutive starts. With Rask on a 1 year deal and the team with both solid defense and a few other cap questions to answer, the cheaper of our two tenders showing he can play well enough to allow us to win consistently would be a huge thing.

I think they see how Rask plays in the playoffs and go from there.

Mmm. I think part of the problem I'm having here is that Rask has never really sold me. That, and I think that Kudo isn't very much behind him in talent, if at all.

Big part of it is that I have a big problem with letting a player just inherit a role. Rask never managed to beat TT for a starting role, and there's a lot of similarities between TT and Kudo so I'm holding out some hope he gives Tuukka a run for his money, even if only to see if Tuukka really has the ability to fight for his job against a real challenger the way Thomas did every year.

I'd rather find that out this year, when he's on a one year deal, than find it out after an extension if he gets Luongo'd. If that's even a concern I'd rather fleece someone for Rask and run with the Russian with Svedberg in the wings and Subban on the way than see Kudo go to the Leafs and start killing us for half what Rask makes.

In the end it depends on what Rask's price is. If he wants anything north of 5, cheaping out on goaltender to beef up the defense starts to look like a viable strategy. I'm not paying Rask a dime more than TT's cap hit from his last contract, and if he doesn't like it he's welcome to win a Cup for us, or even a Vezina trophy, and unless he does that I'd rather pay no more than 3-3.5M or less (my guess for what Kudo would get from another team anxious for a cost-effective starter) for what looks so far to be similar production. Rask has more upside but if that upside isn't going to be on display after this many years, I dunno if we'll ever see it.

Since they have solid depth at goalie (apparently, Suban is highly sought after by other GM's), using this year to have Rask "win the job" seems like a good idea. Top 10 goaltender money seems ok by me, but I heard Rask is asking for top 5 money. I probably let him go find that money. If he can't, I'd resign him.

He really needs to have success in the postseason though.

Tuukka's good but top 5 money is a stretch, especially since the Bruins probably don't need a super elite goaltender to make the playoffs.

Like I said, my ceiling for Rask is TT's cap hit. If he wants to be paid more than a 2 time Vezina winner and Cup champ, he's SOL.

For a backup, why is it that Kudo seems to be the guy who's in net half the time for these turnaround games?

Two straight starts for Kudo, two Boston wins.

Tuukka better watch his tailfeathers.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm keeping a close eye on Kudo, mostly because of guys like Mike Smith and Brian Elliott (and a few years ago, Ilya Bryzgalov). In a defensive system, you don't need a superb highest caliber goalie, and there's an argument to be made that overpaying for one at the cost of forward or defense cap space is penny wise and pound foolish.

Kudo is not as talented a goaltender as Tuukka, but he's shown some skill. If he can be 80% of Tuukka for 40% of the cap, you have to start pondering the cost benefit analysis in a serious kind of way.

So Jaromir Jagr and Wade Redden are what Chia felt we need ed to compete, and we still have our top prospects.

There's also confirmation that Chiarelli is gunning hard after Carl Soderberg and dangling an open starting spot for him if he comes right over from Sweden after his team is eliminated from the SEL playoffs.

Combine that with Jagr, and that could represent a very serious upgrade in the talent level at forward.

Redden isn't an awful idea either. I'd have liked a top guy who he isn't, but if the price was too high he'll do as a poor man's substitute.

Lines if we get Soderberg could be very interesting. I can't see them not skating Jagr with Krejci and that creates an interesting three line situation going forward

Lucic-Krejci-Jagr

Marchand-Bergeron-Peverley

Soderberg-Seguin-Horton

That-Fourth-Line

Kelly could easily be our 13th forward when he comes back If not, pick which of Kelly and Paille you'd rather have playing on Seguin's left and alternate between the other one and Shawn Thornton.

"2nd" line to be Jagr, Seguin, Marchand.

Kind of a surprise. Mentally I had Jagr on Krejci's line written in pen.

I guess Claude figures that now that that top line is finally clicking, there's no way you mess with it, and the second line needs reinforcements at the moment.

So MVP what do you do if Soderberg and Kelly join this merry band of fools? How do you line things up?
