Sure they were. But again, the 2002 Red Sox missed the playoffs for the third year in a row, and we all know what the 2003 and 2004 teams did.

In 8 years Duquette's Red Sox teams won a total of one postseason series and five postseason games.

There is no doubt that Duquette was even worse than Epstein. That does not make Epstein a good GM. When you are compared to someone who is incompetent, unless you are also totally incompetent, you are bound to look good.

Duquette never got the media Epstein got in Boston. That was the big difference. He had a bad relationship with Gammons, because he didn't give him or the Globe the Manny Ramirez' signing story.

Gammons later became a rock guitar buddy of Epstein. Duquette did not have the extroverted personality that Epstein has, nor the ego. That hurt him with the media.

I should add that Harrington had very tight purse strings when he was running the Red Sox. The ball park was dirty. Duquette didn't have much money to work with until the team was up for sale. That's when Harrington opened the floodgates and signed Ramirez.

And yet we've already established that Duquette and Epstein teamed up to bring the franchise its biggest successes in a century.

Duquette got it started; Epstein finished the job. That is a matter of fact. I never said Epstein sucked as a GM; I think he was mediocre. As to how these two produced a winner:
