Yeah yeah while the draft is on going' date=' Matt Barnes just pitch another 6 Shut out innings.[/quote']

And Bradley is 3-4 with a double and 2 runs. Now hitting .384 with a .496 OBP.

A .496 OBP. That's almost unfathomable.

Because that's how you should draft. Drafting for needs is a very easy way to get burned.

I don't think any teams draft for need, though. No prospect is going to be ready soon enough after you draft them that drafting for need makes any kind of sense. You don't know what your roster will look like in 2 or 3 years. And in the rare instances where you draft a guys who could be ready in a season, it's the generational talents like Harper and Strasburg or the odd situation like Craig Hansen (which didn't work out, obviously), so it's a pick for talent anyway.

Some teams might pick for organizational depth (or lack there of), I guess... but it seems most teams get that you should take the best talent you can.

Then why did the Astros reach for Castro instead of obvious higher-ceiling guys like Bux, Gausman or Zunino?

Teams do draft for needs. The needs being shoring up weaknesses in their system, not MLB team.

They may have evaluated him differently than you (and most everyone else). But yeah, I see what you mean now, with holes in the system being the driving force rather than the major league roster.

Usually the driving force for said different evaluation would be a need in the system if ya ask me.

I like Stroman better' date=' but either would be really solid at 24.[/quote']

Stroman could be in the Sox bullpen by the end of the year. He's got big time swing and miss stuff.

I think McCullers falls to 31.

McCullers is going to be a tough signability guy, but his raw stuff is through the roof. Not sure you take the chance of him dropping another 6 picks if you want him.

Well' date=' he's available. Here's hoping the Sox think they can convince him to sign.[/quote']

If they go over slot by $1mm, they're fined $1mm and they lose their 1st round pick in each of the next 2 years.

Depends on what they spend on other picks. If they can sign some of their first 12 picks (all "slot" picks this year) for less than the slot cap, they can shift money McCullers' way. They can't do that if they don't sign guys... they lose the money in that case, but there's nothing stopping them from swinging money left over *after* signing a pick to another slot.

So they could, theoretically, offer him more than slot without triggering the tax or draft pick loss.
