Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Roy Oswalt threw a bullpen session for the Phillies last week and the RedSox this week near his home in Mississippi.

One source told Rosenthal that Oswalt "appeared to be in good shape" but was "more in spring-training mode than mid-season form," which is not surprising. Assuming Vance Worley's elbow injury is indeed minor as the Phillies have said, it would appear that the Red Sox would be a better fit for the veteran right-hander. But, Oswalt might prefer the familiarity with the Phillies. He figures to be pitching for someone around the All-Star break.

I'm kinda confused with all the reports out there.... Supposedly Oswalt turned down a 1-yr $10 million deal from the tigers but was/is considering a 1-yr $5 million dollar deal from the cardinals ( who's rotation is pretty much set )?

Just get him in a Red Sox uniform. He's better than 3 of the 5 starters if he pitches lousy for Oswalt. If he is healthy, he can outpitch Beckett and Lester too. Get Bard back in the pen where he can be useful.

And send Dice K back to Japan. He's useless to the Red Sox.

Yeah, you gotta think that if the Red Sox can get Oswalt and send Bard back to the bullpen, they could turn the corner.

They're getting close to turning the corner as is. They can grind it out until Ellsbury and Crawford get back.

Then, around mid June, when Ells is back, when Craw is back, and when Oswalt is ready, you've got a very good rotation, you've got a very good bullpen, and you've got an elite lineup.

Hopefully he's ready to pitch for a reasonable salary too. Oswalt could be a decent addition.

I would say that Felix Doubront's success this season reiterates that all an MLB pitcher needs to do is command a variety of pitches to be successful. Lester, Beckett and Buchholz have better stuff, but if they can't command they are useless.

I can't imagine the Sox would be the only one interested in Oswalt's services.

Doubront has been a pleasant surprise, but he must cut down on the walks or he will die in this division. He has great stuff, I am not sure what you are alluding to here. He throws mid 90s and can break out a nasty curve with a serviceable change. His issue will be the walks. He cannot continue to walk 4.5 per 9 while giving up a hit per inning and expect to be successful.

He does have good stuff, you're right. At their peaks, Becket, Lester and Buchholz had better stuff. That's all I'm saying. Doubront wasn't ever reported to be a guy with great stuff, but he seems to have made a step in the right direction over the past 2 seasons or so.

Oswalt's career numbers vs. AL teams are just OK-3.70 ERA, WHIP a little over 1.3. He's never pitched at Fenway. I'll be surprised if we sign him. If we do he could help. But we better also be prepared to be disappointed. It's not going to be an easy move for a career NL pitcher close to the end of his career coming to the AL East for half a season.

There has been a lot of misinformation about Oswalt's situation since last year.

If he indeed signs in Boston what would be the figure? the Tigers-Cards offers really rattles me, is it going to be 3m or 7?

With the injury to Feliz, he'll probably end up in Texas:

Rangers Will Consider Roy Oswalt

By Zach Links [May 21 at 7:16pm CST]

Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels said the club will consider signing pitcher Roy Oswalt in the wake of Neftali Feliz’s elbow injury, writes T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. The Rangers watched the veteran throw on Friday.

Texas has long been linked to Oswalt but there was no room for the 34-year-old in the starting rotation. Feliz's injury could create an opening for Oswalt as the club isn't ready to ready to promote Martin Perez or Neil Ramirez from Triple-A. Scott Feldman is set to replace Feliz in the rotation and while Alexi Ogando is also a candidate he is not stretched out like Feldman.

Oswalt wouldn't be ready to step in to the rotation immediately for the Rangers but could provide depth in the event of another injury.

I wonder whether there is serious interest in Oswalt--anywhere. He wants top dollar and he is a guy with something to prove--that he is healthy and not over the hill. Can't see anybody throwing big bucks at him without some conditionals.

We should have some interest. Between Bard and Buchholz, one of those guys may need to be dropped from the rotation very soon.

Ha. I just wrote the same about Bard and Buchholz in another thread. Right you are.

The sensible thing is Bard closing now,and Bailey-Bard or Bard-Bailey when Bailey comes back.

Aceves can take Bard's place as a starter.

Buchholz needs to go to Pawtucket or the bullpen to resolve his problems. Who can take his place?

The Sox have had three different pitching coaches in three years, and the pitching still sucks.

That tells me it's not the pitching coach.

The latest on Oswalt that I hear is that he is going to the Rangers.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the "full expectation" among some rival executives is that Roy Oswalt will sign with the Rangers.

It's a logical fit now that Neftali Feliz (elbow) is on the disabled list, but Olney was told that Oswalt may be attracted to the Rangers because of his ties with Nolan Ryan and Greg Maddux and the team's proximity to his home in Mississippi. The Rangers reportedly watched Oswalt throw last week, as did the Red Sox and Cardinals, but they have yet to make a formal offer.

Oswalt's story is hard to figure. Why didn't he sign earlier with Boston or Detroit if he wasn't waiting for an opening in Texas or St. Louis? I find it hard to believe he will consider Boston for anything other than a bargaining chip.

He's looking for the cushiest situation possible-close to his home, playing for one of the best teams, half a season's work. I wish him all the worst.

Oswalt will get hit in that Texas stadium. He isn't anywhere near the pitcher he was in Houston at this point. Wasn't in Philly, either.

Roy Oswalt On Orioles' Radar

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [May 24 at 11:14am CST]

Free agent right-hander Roy Oswalt hasn't discussed a contract with the Red Sox or Rangers, according to the latest rumors. The Phillies have also been linked to Oswalt, who is expected to sign a new contract midseason. Here are the latest rumors:

Oswalt is on the Orioles' radar, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. Orioles executive VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette said this week that he's looking for ways of adding pitching depth, so it's not surprising they're eyeing Oswalt. Teams other than the Orioles, Red Sox, Phillies and Rangers are involved, according to Heyman.

He would really help stabilize their starting pitching. He would bring some legitimacy to them as a contender.

Nolan Ryan is a pretty good judge of pitchers (!), and if the Rangers don't sign Oswalt, it could mean Ryan doesn't think he can help at this point in his career.
