Its 4.93 right now. Are you happy with that? Is that the kind of ERA that will get this TEAM back into contention?

When it's weighted by one bad inning in a start he began with 4.30 then yeah, maybe. He's had some great starts this year. He's still getting the hang of it. I thank god that the management on this team isn't as reactionary as you are.

Well, Mark. Welcome over.

Too bad it is starting this way.

Thanks, Pumps. Glad to see some posting going on here. I was getting tired of talking to myself on the other board. Although Muggah and Bo are there tonight.

And Oswalt will be better? I'm notsure about that.

guys, stop using ERA.

Here is the deal here. Bard as a reliever is a dominant force to be reckoned with. Bard in the rotation is a guy with reduced power and no stamina. A guy throwing 98 doesnt have to be as fine. A guy throwing 92 does. I think the Bard project would have been considered a success had he shown continued power (ie high K/9IP) even in the setting of poor command. The low K's and the progressively lower velocity makes me think this isnt going to end well. Most people on here thought Bard would be a guy throwing mid 90s with a knockout slider. Well, he's throwing low 90s with a loopy slurve type slider. His stuff and command have taken a hit and his production has suffered. I think it might be time for him to move back to the role he dominated in.

Well I think Bard has done fine as a 5th starter. I do think that if there is one thing that I have noticed the longer he goes into the season it is that I have come to the conclusion right or wrong that this has been and is less about giving Bard an opportunity to learn to start and work his way farther into a rotation spot and more about the Sox just wanting to get innings out of him as the 5th starter.

The Sox really did not have a good option at the start of the season. Cook was not ready, Padilla was surely not ready at the start of the season and likely is not ready to start now. If I saw more of an effort by the coaching staff to work with Bard I might feel otherwise and I could easily be wrong about this. It just seems to me that they are not doing nearly enough to help Bard along and help him progress. He seems pretty much on his own out there.

We do not have the leeway this year to allow this experiment to continue-if we would like to make some sort of a run at it.

If we signed Oswalt, who do you really think is going to the pen? Doubront? Nope. His ERA is 4.09. The big 3? Nope. Not gonna happen. If we sign Oswalt, as we should, its Bard who will be back in the pen. If the team is better next year from a pitching standpoint, then maybe we give him one more shot.

You obviously cannot read. I said most pitchers come back within 12 months, but the recovery for a starter's stamina and stuff to return is 18 months. I said he will not be the previous DiceK until September, and with his minor league stats thus far, I am right to this point. I also said that relievers usually can return to dominance faster since they dont have to throw multiple innings.

Doubront?

Doubront has been average. He's hit or miss every 5th day. He only looks so good because we're parading out Buchholz and Bard every few days

You just love throwing money at this teams problems.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree on that one. He's been very good out of the 4 spot so far.

Its an active game thread. Lots of different opinions here. Jacksonianmarch is a Yankees fan, just so you know, but he's cool too. The rest of us are die-hard Sox fans, no matter what Born to Run says

I will take a #4 SP with an ERA of 4.09 any day.

Oswalt has never' date=' ever pitched this bad. It's safe to assume he'd be an upgrade[/quote']

That's a horrible assumption for an aging and injured pitcher.

Just stating my opinion dude.

Its going to be very very tough to beat Hamels now.

We have a better chance tomorrow and Sunday.
