We're reading a lot of optimistic reports about Dice 's progress. He's on the second leg of his rehab. Many are projecting that he will be back in the rotation by June 1st. I am on record as not being that optimistic about his return date. Our resident TalkSox physician has opined that it takes more than 12 months for a starter to return to effectiveness. Let's try to guess the date of Dice K's first start. Whoever comes closest to the date of his first Red Sox start will win $20. The prize will get bumped up to $50 if you guess the exact date. The selected dates will be posted here for everyone to see. The date of his return to the roster is not what we are guessing. Also, an appearance in relief doesn't count. We are guessing the date of his first start. There are only a few conditions:

1. Eligibility is limited to members with at least 100 posts

2. Only 1 entry per member

3. You can't duplicate someone else's entry

4. You can't edit your post that includes your entry. That will invalidate your entry.

5. Your entry must be submitted by midnight EDT this Friday (4/27).

Good luck!

Bobby V: ‘I don’t think Dice-K’s all that close’ to rejoining Red Sox

Posted by Scott Lauber at 6:05 pm

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The 30-day window on Daisuke Matsuzaka’s minor league rehab assignment is due to expire one week from today.

But that doesn’t mean the Red Sox will promote him right away.

“Right now, I don’t think he’s all that close to pitching in the major leagues,” Bobby Valentine said today. “He might take a big step. Not until he’s ready. It’s not the calendar that’s going to dictate whether a guy pitches in the major leagues, I don’t think.”

Matsuzaka (Matt Stone photo, left), recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery last June, is scheduled to start tomorrow for Triple-A Pawtucket in Durham, N.C., then will make another start next Tuesday night for the PawSox. Beyond that, and barring an actual injury setback, the Red Sox could cite something as simple as a lack of arm strength to place him back on the disabled list and restart the 30-day rehab clock.

Unlike predecessor Terry Francona, Valentine is able to speak to Matsuzaka in his native language thanks to his years of managing in Japan. He has had several conversations with Matsuzaka over the past few weeks, and from those, he can determine that the right-hander agrees he isn’t quite ready to rejoin the Red Sox’ rotation. In particular, Valentine said Matsuzaka is trying to regain the proper throwing mechanics from before his surgery.

“I understand everything he says, and he understands everything I say. That’s why I don’t think he’s close,” Valentine said. “There’s a lot of things that you do before you’re totally ready, and I’m not sure he’s put his elbow situation behind him yet. I don’t think he totally understands where he is with his elbow. He hasn’t confused me yet. If he tomorrow after the game says, ‘Bring on the Yankees,’ I’ve not understood a lot of the conversations. I don’t think he’s going to say that.

“It’s not necessarily tentative. It’s just the understanding of why it happened and what he did to pitch while it was hurt, that mechanic, whether or not that mechanic is something he should be using now or if he should go back to the mechanic he was using when he hurt it. It’s a very confusing state. Until he figures that out totally in his mind, competition is going to be confused. He won’t be into the competition. We want him to be here, not only to be healthy, but we want him to be in the competition.”

–Rather than pitching Tuesday night for Pawtucket, as scheduled, Daisuke Matsuzaka received an injection to relieve some stiffness in his right trapezius muscle. Matsuzaka’s 30-day minor league rehab assignment is due to expire Wednesday. By shutting down Matsuzaka, the Red Sox will be able to restart his rehab clock and buy him some additional time in the minors. Matsuzaka still is less than a year removed from Tommy John elbow surgery.

If they are planning another 30 days of rehab, everyone except RedSoxRules, Yeszir, iortiz, J_E, and me would be eliminated.

So far just the 15 day DL. But it does sound like it will be closer to July/August for his return.

It's official:

Matsuzaka to start on Saturday

June 6, 2012 03:26 PM

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

Globe colleague Nick Cafardo is reporting that Daisuke Matsuzaka will start against the Nationals on Saturday.

Matsuzaka made his sixth minor-league rehab start on Tuesday night, going 1.1 innings and throwing 40 pitches for Triple-A Pawtucket against Indianapolis. The Red Sox had planned for him to go three innings.

Matsuzaka allowed a run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He had a rough first inning, allowing a run on two hits and two walks while throwing 31 pitches.

The Red Sox cut Matsuzaka short so that he would be available to start on Saturday in place of Daniel Bard, who was demoted on Tuesday after a series of rocky performances.

Matsuzaka is on the 60-day disabled list, but that is retroactive to the start of the season and he is eligible to return. Matsuzaka last pitched for the Red Sox on May 16, 2011. He underwent Tommy John elbow surgery a few weeks later.

Unless Laser Show states that he was only joking that his selected date of June 6th was not meant to be for 3013, VA wins the pool!! Congrats VA!! but only conditionally.
