No one would've cared if they didn't fall apart. Just win. Who cares about the beer and chicken crap.

I agree. The outrage over chicken and beer was dumb and masked the real problems last year.

I could care less. It's a silly PR move imo.

It never was about the beer IMHO. It was the rap (whehter true or not) that Beckett never spoke to a position player. It was about not supporting team mates.

I think it was just latched on to by the media because it somehow illustrates a careless environment. Would they have performed better without the beer and chicken? Nope, they didn't just start drinking the division away. They shat the bed. End of story.

I disagree in the sense that most of the talk radio and media folks knew it wasn't the beer per se. It was a sense of entitlement that they had, so they didn't have to work as hard. That was the word that virtually all the talking heads used, entitlement. Beer and chicken just became the shorthand or metaphor for the entire meltdown.

Well I'm sure that they knew the beer and chicken didn't play any role in the effect, but it's still the basic idea that they're trying to illustrate a lack of heart because of it. Quite frankly it doesn't make sense. There's no controversy if they win.

Red Sox ban Chicken in Clubhouse

Globe Staff February 25, 2012 05:00 PM

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox pitchers will not be eating take out chicken in the clubhouse during games this season. Yesterday, Manager Bobby Valentine banned beer in the clubhouse, and today he added take out chicken to the list of banned food.

Manager Bobby Valentine told the team today that he has banned take out in the clubhouse and on team flights returning to Boston.

The edict was expected given the news last fall that starting pitchers Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester and John Lackey drank beer and ate fast-food chicken while games were going on last season.

But Valentine may have done it anyway, saying that take out chicken was banned from the Mets clubhouse when he managed the team from 1996-2002.

“It’s just what I’ve always done,” he said. “I’m comfortable with it that way. I can't stand the smell of that stuff”

The Red Sox are the 19th team to ban chicken in the clubhouse, a list that includes the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers and world champion Cardinals. Some teams also ban pizza. When asked if he might also ban Pizza, Manager Valentine joked that his Italian ancestry wouldn't allow him to ban pizza. However, he warned the beef jerky could be added to the list of banned food.

The chicken and alcohol ban on Boston-bound flights is a safety issue. Those charter flights typically arrive well after midnight and the players drive home from Fenway Park afterward. There are no rest stops open at those hours if the players should get salmonella poisoning.

Valentine was asked how the new rules were received.

“You mean like a standing ovation or booing? I didn’t get either of those,” he said. “It was probably somewhere right in between.”

Valentine isn’t expecting any resistance from the players — not that they have any choice in the matter.

"What would happen if they got traded to St. Louis? Would they refuse the trade? Or New York? Or one of the other 19 teams, or however many teams there are?” Valentine said. “I don't know. I doubt it. I don't know what kind of pushback you could get.”

David Ortiz, the team’s longest-tenured player, who had supported the ban on alcohol wasn't happy about the fried chicken ban. “We’re not here to drink; we’re here to play baseball. This ain’t no bar, but damn you gotta eat. Big Papi needs fuel in his furnace so he can hit.” Ortiz said.

General manager Ben Cherington said Valentine recommended the change and he fully supported the idea.

Well then if you folks can just do me a favor and check out your crystal balls I will be happy to inform Sox Management that they need not worry about their team being under a microscope. Talk Sox has assured me that they are going to win the division, the Playoffs and the World Series this year.

You would think nobody has ever had to make a business decision based on limiting risk.

Given the number of players that are even likely to care a nit about the issue, what is the Sox downside risk for eliminating beer from the clubhouse? I would guess it to be related to both the number of players that are going to care AT ALL and the number that are going to do what????? Protest.....pout......sit down at home plate and watch three come right down the pipe without swinging at them?????

If they start the season slow do you think any of them is going to get up in front of a meeting of players and coaches and tell V that if he just brought beer back to the clubhouse everything would be just fine?? Of course not. If retiring to the clubhouse drinking beer during games is not an issue which is the prevailing view then not being able to retire to the clubhouse during games for a cold one is equally not an issue.

Is is not a safe bet that this team would be under a microscope for that behavior this season? I would say that it is a very safe bet.

Would this team and its Management be roasted alive in the media if that behavior was found to have continued this year unless the Sox were way out in front of the Division? Of course they would be.

So you want the Organization to RISK being skewered in the media in their 100 Year Fenway Celebratory year unless they are pounding out victories by the bucketful from the word GO and for what benefit? I have not heard a benefit yet. I have only heard that there is no damage TO THE TEAM's PERFORMANCE for allowing the behavior to continue.

I would argue that there is some damage to the team having a united vision if the same bunch of guys treat games that they are not actively participating in end in the middle of the 7th inning but never mind. I will accept the view that there is no damage at all from a performance perspective.

However, presuming that Management believed the behavior would have continued this season, I will still say that they made a business decision based on the risks involved to their image as an Organization which goes directly to the top and bottom lines which is the Holy Grail of Professional Baseball Teams......not winning anyway! Winning plays second fiddle to generating revenue and profits and only matters at all as a relationship to generating revenue and profits.

 I don't know if I want to be part of a world where baseball and beer don't go together.

I'll up my intake of beer in the gamethreads.

Most beers are sold nationally so a "local" brand expectation means nothing

Havent really experienced good macro brewery stuff. Micro brews are usually better.

Now they are trying to kill a flea with a sledgehammer. This chicken crap doesn't make any sense at all. Doesn't the team put on a spread after the game as most teams do? Why not chicken? It's a hell of a lot better for your health than beef, pork or lamb. The pendulum has swung completely out of kilter here. It is one thing to ban beer from the clubhouse, though after a game I see nothing wrong with that. But chicken too? Let's face it, last year Francona lost the team. Some of the players carried Terry's openess too far and took advantage of his leniency; now the front office is over-reacting if you ask me.

Actually it was DO who banned the chicken. He is an a low-cholestrol diet so if he can't eat fried chicken, nobody is . He announced that this morning

Well Ted, looks like I walked into a pile of dung on that one. I start to wonder what I can believe nowadays. Well anyway, ST is underway and next week we start playing games, so there should be more to really take up our attention soon enough. Thanks for the heads-up.

Sandwich wraps are the real culprit. Sure, they're commonly marketed as a healthy alternative, but they're frequently filled with fatty meats, high sodium cheeses, and dripping in high calorie dressings. Plus, they free up a hand when eating, which often times winds up being used to consume a sugary soda, or worse, a beer.
