Looks like Brentz was promoted to triple A on the 30th. Went 0-3 in his debut. He's not far away now! Another season in the minors. May see him up some next season!

He's having a good playoff series 3HR (20HR overall)

I think we see him next July in Fenway.

Cherington said he expects top prospect Xander Bogaerts to be invited to major league camp, but also to start 2013 season in minors #RedSox

Rob Bradford ‏@bradfo

Really good outing by @anthony_ranaudo in Puerto Rico opener tonight: 3IP, no hits, 3Ks

Ranaudo touches 94MPH on the gun.

Bryce Brentz's AFL: .327 .397 .500

I think Cecchini is a future trade chip and Bryce Brentz should be a now-trade chip. Cecchini is blocked and isnt going to be as good as Middlebrooks, and Brentz is a boom or bust player with limited walk potential. I'd deal Brentz now and wait for one more yr on Cecchini

I think Cecchini is a trade chip too. I expect his name to be part of any significant Red Sox trade this off season.

Brentz I can see being one. But I can also see them holding on to him.

Brentz sounds like a starter on a second division team. If the sox want to start keeping players who will be just above replacement level for their position, then sign me up. He sounds like a guy who could be akin to Jeremy Burnitz. 25-30HR, no walks, average in the low .200s and mediocre defense. Those players start in Milwaukee, not Boston

From the scouting reports I've read, he has an excellent arm, and meh-speed. That might be good enough to be above-average in left field since there is so much less ground to cover. No idea about the plate discipline.

150K's to 46 walks. His K rates are astronomical and his walk rates are meager for a power hitter. Also, his average has been kept up with an unsustainable .370BABIP. Once he gets to the bigs and that domino falls, he's gonna be a .220 hitter with a .280OBP and good power. Sounds like Salty

I saw a scouting report that said Francour had the best arm the scout had ever seen. Brentz was 2nd.

Ya the more I read about him the more I am actually starting to agree with you. He could very well be trade bate soon.

A power-hitting RF with a very low walk rate and a great arm? Those players start in Oakland, don't they? (Reddick and Brentz have similar numbers over their minor league years, albeit in different sample sizes)

Reddick hit 32 bombs while playing half his games in Oakland. Sufficed to say, he would have been even better if he played elsewhere.

Nope he hit more HRs at home

That might have improved his SLG or HR totals, but it wouldn't have fixed his OBP issues. The point was that Brentz and Reddick have similar minor league and scouting profiles. Tons of power, not great at getting on base. Good arms, good athletes.

Those of you wishing the Sox had held onto Reddick may want to pull for them to keep Brentz too. I'm not necessarily devistated by losing Reddick, but in retrospect they could have got more for him. A low AVG, low OBP player looks much better than they probably are.

That is true. Reddick would have solved your issue in LF last yr, though, but you are right. The all power and nothing else crowd are overrated.

In all fairness, he did win a gold glove.

Sad for Ranaudo. With that level of talent, he'd sure look good as one of the depth options for the 4-5 rotation slots right now. Problem is he can't stay healthy, nor consistent when he is deemed healthy enough to pitch. At this point, I really can't see his ceiling being any more than a 5th starter or middle relief option. Might be the best way to keep him healthy to limit the innings.

Still young though, but his opportunity to be considered as a true future rotation option is beginning to dwindle.

Ranaudo shut down with a groin injury. Seems like yet another of those players who can't stay heathly.

He's going to be one of those "well he still young with upside" add ins on some deal.

Cano is actually a very strong defender, so your above comment is rather misguided

Actually Cano had a decent year but is an average to below average defender for his career:

-30.8 career UZR

-3.8 career UZR/150

rTOT/yr (Baseball Refs UZR) - 5

2012:

9.7 UZR

9.2 UZR/150

10 rTOT

9 rTOT/ year

Pedroia 2012

10.0 UZR

10.8 UZR/150

11 rTOT

11 rTOT/year

Pedroia was better in every aspect of defense by both metrics. He should have won the GG, but like I said, its a BS award, which is why Jeter had any at all.

Watch Frank Montas and Manuel Margot this year. I like both of them. As well as Jacobs to rebound. IMHO, I see Cecchini, Brentz, Iglesias and Workman/Wilson being used as trade fodder as the Red Sox try to push themselves back into the hunt come July.

So did Cano, which completely negates any merit that the GG once had.

I missed this post last month, but I'll comment on it anyway.

In all fairness, he did earn a gold glove

Fixed.

Baseball America's prospect handbook came out. They ranked the Red Sox's farm system #6 overall.

Xander is #10 overall, Bradley #32, Barnes #43.
