I think he needs to be moved up too. Buchholz is a little different since he spent so much longer in A (most of the season) but then spent only 16 innings in A+ before being bumped to AA the next season. The competition difference between A and A+ isn't nearly as large as A+ to AA so he needs to be bumped up.

You start to see professional hitters in AA who just dont have the skills to make it on the big league level. Guys who have had cups of coffee, with good approaches at the plate but lacking the skill to be solid contributors on a big club. Those are the hitters he needs to dominate in order to move up. AA should pose some sort of a challenge for him.

I live twenty minutes from Delmarva shorebirds I caught the game barnes pitched against bundy and then when Mickey Pena pitched barnes looked way ahead of that league I hope he does well the rest of the way through the minors Pena doesn't pitch fast but I was sitting right behind home plate and he had alot of movement to his pitches and they were hitting the corners then cervenka came in that game gave up to walks I chugged a 7 dollar miller and left

INITIAL LOOK: Barnes impressed in his first start at Salem Memorial Ballpark, allowing one run on five hits over six innings. Topping out at 98 mph on the stadium gun, he struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

"He's a very composed and confident pitcher on the mound," said Salem pitching coach Kevin Walker, adding that Barnes' priority at this level is refining his offspeed pitches. "First and foremost, he's got a really good fastball, and he pitches well with it both inside and out ?? He's a special kid and a special talent."

Barnes has 70K to 6BB this season.

Some updates:

Barnes with probably his worst outing of the year, 4 IP, 6 hits, 3 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

28 IP, 3 BB, 36 K, 1.93 ERA at Salem now.

Bradley Jr. with another 4 hit night last night, .371/.491/.557/1.048 on the season

Brentz with a 5 hit night with 3 2B's for AA Portland, .306/.358/.484/.842 on the season, 1.072 OPS in May

Cecchini in A with a slow start to the season but a big May, up to .307/.392/.450/.841 on the season, .961 OPS in May

Bogaerts slows down in May, .258/.308/.381/.689. Still at .267/.332/.420/.752 on the season in A+, only 19 years old so probably about 2-3 years ahead of the curve

Helium Watch: Drake Britton promoted to AA after 25.2 IP, 7 BB, 29 K, 2.10 ERA month for Salem. We'll have to see what he does in AA but he has good stuff and is a LHP

Barnes is interesting and his peripherals are very encouraging. He's advanced for his league, though. It'll be interesting to see how he handles a promotion to Portland later in the year.

Couldnt find a thread to post this, but Kalish went yack again in AAA, which makes 3 in 8 games. Kid has been on a tear maybe well all finally see him where he belongs in the OF at Fenway

This is the first time they let Barnes pitch the 7th inning. It's a DH 7 inning complete game and a W for Barnes.

Control is what impressed me most. Remember Bard's single A days? 76 walks in 75 innings. Nights and day difference between them, and Barnes has as good of an arm as Bard.

bump him to AAA, AA is for guys who needs more polishing, if this guy is good get him to AAA

AA is where a lot of the hotter prospects reside, also, AA is the level where he will start to face professional hitters capable of working the count. He needs to be challenged, cause right now, he isnt being

Kalish has been hitting real well in his stint thus far at AAA:

.394/.487/.818/1.305 4 HR, 6/9 BB/K in 33 AB.

Not sure what exactly is keeping McDonald an MLB player at this point as Kalish could very well be the starting RF next season and this is the perfect time to groom him into the majors again.

Also Lars Anderson refuses to die as a prospect: .268/.392/.495/.887, good power and plate discipline and still only 24. Though the OF/1B backlog probably makes him more trade bait at this point

Drake Britton is also intriguing. A top 100 prospect before the start of 2011 and then had a horrible 2011 and beginning of 2012 campaign. Thus far a 1.10 ERA after three starts while showing good stuff.

Lars is making himself back into a tertiary prospect for a blockbuster trade. Nobody can really consider him a centerpiece, but he can certainly be the third guy in a deal for a guy like Garza.

Britton isnt a starter, IMO. The guy got completely destroyed in a pitcher's league last yr in A+. They decided to move him out of the league and he has responded by pitching better, although with crappy peripherals. He's a reliever, IMO. I think they shorten him to FB-breaking ball and bring him through as a lefty reliever, maybe not even a specialist due to how good his stuff is. But I dont think this kid is starter material. They'll keep him there until they HAVE to move him, but he's not a big league starter, IMO.

Agreed on Lars, he seems like the perfect piece for teams needing a major-league ready corner OF who has decent potential and will be cost controlled for a real long time.

Disagree, at least for now, on Britton. His stats to close out his A+ campaign were dam good (25.2 IP, 7 BB, 29 K, 2.10) and his peripherals look out of whack in AA because he walked 6 in a rainy first start (though also didn't allow a hit). Im cautiously optimistic, but I don't think they are ready to make him a MR yet.

Has anyone heard anything at all about how Mark Prior is looking in AAA? They have been sticking with him for a few months now, so perhaps there's SOMETHING there (given how quickly players like him sometimes disappear). Anyway, he was an absolute beast back in the day. Wouldn't it be awesome if he worked his way back to 2003 form? We can dream, right?

He's had a couple of outings since being reactivated. He has pitched 10 1/3 innings a struck out 23. He has given runs in 3 of his last 4 appearances. He walks a lot of guys, but most of his outs are by way of the K. I heard that he throws 90-91.

When are the sox going to move De La Cruz up? I don't keep tabs on him too much but he's over 300 at .320 with over 10 homers. Still very young only 20 and with Bradley comfortably in Portland it should be time to move him to Salem

Mark Prior has pitched 12.1 innings. He's got 25 K against 13 BB, and has only allowed 5 hits. Like a700 said, he's striking out a ton of hitters, and he's also dominating RHH's.

If he can stay healthy (huge if), then he could definitely help the bullpen.

I just realized that he's over 9 BB/9... 1.5 WHIP is pretty sad, but 3.7 H/9 is fantastic. Control takes time to get back, but the K/9 and H/9 numbers look very promising

7/23 recap

AA

– Bryce Brentz went 3-for-5 with his second double and second walk in as many days. Before Monday, he was just 4-for-32 (.125) with one double and three walks in his previous eight games.

A+

– Brandon Jacobs went 3-for-5 with a double and a homer. He’s now hitting .319/.388/.514/.901 this month. On the season, the 21-year-old is hitting .284/.340/.444/.784 with nine homers and 12 steals, though he has some odd splits to get to that point. While he did his damage against right-hander Roman Mendez (formerly of the Sox) on Monday, he’s hitting just .247/.296/.366/.662 against righties, as compared to eye-popping marks of .397/.466/.679/1.145 against lefties. Also, even though he plays in an extreme pitcher’s park, he’s hitting .324/.400/.515/.915 at home, and .254/.290/.390/.680 on the road.

A

– Blake Swihart went 1-for-4 with a homer, his third of the month and sixth of the year. July continues to be the switch-hitting catcher’s best offensive month, as he’s hitting .298 with a .355 OBP (his best in any month thus far), .561 slugging mark (again, his best such total) and .916 OPS.

– Garin Cecchini went 1-for-2 with a double and his 33rd stolen base of the year. He’s hitting .336/.427/.467/.895 in 28 games since the All-Star break.
