Cashman says he faked Crawford interest to up price

"New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman admitted Thursday that he feigned interest in Carl Crawford last offseason to drive up the price for the Boston Red Sox to sign the free agent.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman joined ESPN New York 1050's "The Michael Kay Show" with some interesting things to say about his attempt to drive up Boston's price for Carl Crawford.

"I actually had dinner with the agent to pretend that we were actually involved and drive the price up," Cashman said. "The outfield wasn't an area of need, but everybody kept writing Crawford, Crawford, Crawford, Crawford. And I was like, 'I feel like we've got Carl Crawford in Brett Gardner, except he costs more than $100 million less, with less experience."

Cashman eats Theo's lunch. When he showed no interest in Tex, the Sox got arrogant and walked away from the table playing hardball. He played them into putting what they said was their best offer on the table and then he came in and topped it with a take it or leave it offer. Tex had to take it or risk that the Yanks pulled it off the table leaking the information to the press and then the Sox might even reduce their offer. But yeah right let's use the excuse that he was never going to play for anyone but the yanks. Let's go with that. He's been making a fool of Theo and his twit of a boss for years.

This is call mind games.

He's obviously trolling, trying to gain any advantage entering these few games.

Too late in the game to be try and shake up a team mentally. Despite how Boston has been doing. They always play their best ball when playing the Yanks.

You remember when Boston were 2-10? They turned it around facing the Yankees. I hope this goes the same.

Hey' date=' Cashman, maybe you didn't hear about a guy named Jayson Werth. He's the real reason why Crawford cost that much.[/quote']Maybe he drove up Werth's price too?

Anyone with any sense knew this before Cashman even said anything, bad part on him to say it though. Save it until you're done, cause you could of wine and dined Papelbon this off season too. The price of a $50 outback meal for papelbon could of cost the Red Sox a few more millon.

I heard Cashman was just pretending to be interested in Cliff Lee too, to drive up the price for Texas and Philadelphia. He's also secretly been in discussions with Prince Fielder's camp so the Cubs will have to pay more.

He's also in negotiations with God to work out a water-walking deal.

Please folks. I can't really stand the sudden deification of Brian Cashman.

Werth signed Dec 5th. Crawford had dinner with the Yankees on Dec 8th.

From this you conclude that Cashman didn't also drive up Werth's price? Did the Yankees meet with his agent or call his agent to inquire about Werth. I don't think having dinner with Crawford would drive up Werth's price.

There's nothing sudden about it. He's been outmaneuvering Theo for years starting with Theo's well-chronicled lame attempt to sign Contreras by renting every room in the hotel. Theo was just lucky that Contreras was a bust.
