Looking back at Red Sox offer for Johan Santana...Whew!

I'm gonna have to disagree.. I was so glad the Mutts took him on.. Johan was already in decline by that fateful winter and if history is any indicator if ever there was a team to overpay or deal for washed up (or close to washed up) talent, it's the Mets..

Tali, I like the geek stats.. have you seen wOBA yet?

Don't mean to nitpick - and I haven't read the whole thread yet so I might be piling on too - but he did strike out 235 batters with an ERA+ at 129, so almost 30% above average the year before the trade. He contended for a Cy in his first year with the Mets. He was in less decline than Schilling was when he got him and he was a must-have for our championship hopes in '04. Had we got Johan in '08 I think we'd regard him similarly. We were one arm away that year.

Wow was I wrong.. Stats-wise he was still on par with the rest of his career in Minnesota.. but all I can remember are the bombs he gave up.. he just seemed ineffective before he left the Twin Cities.. maybe it was because he was on the twins? eh, whatever.. he's a Mutt now.. fading into obscurity.. eventually

Well.. I think it was more a mix of the political board and someone there posting personal info than the night some jerk face called my house out of the blue.. although I'm sue it contributed.. I'm pretty sure 99% of those old posters were avid Big Show listeners and probably callers too

Most of the trolls were only a few different ppl. The biggest problem was that guy (forgot his name) that Jason called out and he got pissed. Later we found out he played the role of a women Mama Kin I think. She/he was actually PMing as a women to Hammer.

I miss that crazy place.

Santana was a bit better than the usual Mets big ticket pickups. Better than Bay. maybe better than Beltran, though the Mets managed to rob the Giants for Beltran (beware of big media buildups for players in NY). He did have one or two good years before his arm gave out.

But the Mets gave up nothing for him except a big contract--and did the Red Sox and Yankees a big favor at the same time. That's pretty tough to do. :)

ERA+ is ballpark adjusted, his ERA+ in those years were 166, 130 and 132. He's exactly 1 year removed from being his same old overpowering self, due to injury. Santana isn't ineffective, and hasn't been for right around 10 years now.

Johan was good for a sub 1.2WHIP a sub 3ERA and nearly 8K per 9 in a Mets uniform. He also threw 2 seasons with 199 or higher IP in his three. But his last 2 yrs ended in surgery and he's out this yr. He was never an overpowering type of pitcher, so he should come back just fine, especially in that ballpark. The Mets also have the right GM now to turn things around and a few nice looking kids blossoming at the big league level in Davis and Niese. That team will be a dark horse candidate by 2013, mark it here....unless Alderson blows it all up and goes into firesale mode

When healthy, Santana has pitched very well for the Mets. I just am glad the Red Sox didn't give Lester, Ellsbury, Masterson, and Lowrie to get him.

I would not mind the Red Sox looking into buying low on Santana tomorrow. I'm just glad they did not buy high on him a few years ago.

The Mets haven't gotten their moneys worth with Santana, except maybe the first year.

Aren't they paying him $25 mil per? That was pretty astronomical at the time. Wilpon was tossing around a lot of that Madoff money.

The Yankees are getting better bang for the buck with CC. But the question is how long he can hold up with that barrel body.

I went to a game in that stupid tent out in minnesota and saw Santana hit 99. That same game Nathan topped out at 92 so the gun was not juiced, imo. I'm not trying to be like "OHHH IN YOUR FACE, GUY THATS WRONG" but the dude had it all. He was fun to watch.

Santana's change made him great, but it was his awesome fastball that made his change (maybe vise versa) so commanding. He was by no means a soft tosser.
