No two people experience the same disorder the same way. I know plenty of people with OCD and GAD who are stand out professionals but are socially crippled.

I'm sorry, you're right. I should have clarified that with extreme/acute cases...

These aren't disorders. It's just the way some people are. If it prevents them from functioning in society the way people expect them to function' date=' the mental health profession has to classify it as a disorder. The profession is awash with quacks and frauds dispensing all sorts of chemical and other therapies.[/quote']

Old white people tend to be rather resistant to science.

Psych is not advanced enough to have earned science status though.

How is it not a science? It's not like a bearded Austrian sits in an office snorting cocaine and declares he noticed a lot of people behave a certain way so it's put in the DSM. Everything in the DSM is scientifically tested.

Social science is not not real science. It might be a fraud, a scam, some sort of pseudo science, but it is not science. It's more art than science.

Actually.......

I just mean that the brain is far more complex than any part of the body, so trying to treat it so far really is a crapshoot. There are so many disorders, but there are only a tiny amount of them that can actually be treated relately successfully, and I'd attribute more "science" to pharm in that regard anyway. I think that it will take many more years till it is widely regarded by popular opinion as "science".

I wouldn't really disagree with any of that. The public has long believed that psychology isn't a science even though it's long been based in the scientific method which is the definition of a science. Does that mean there aren't biases, trends, whacks, etc? No. Once upon a time, homosexuality was listed in the DSM. But there are biases, trends, whacks in any field. If there wasn't a successful surgery for a medical condition, I doubt people would declare that the medical profession was therefor illegitimate.

Of course money is a driving factor behind psychology as well, just as it is any profession.

As for the successful treatment of the mentally ill, I think the public looks at the severely mentally ill and because they don't act normal consider them unsuccessfully treated. But to a psychologist or the person themselves, successful treatment could simply be a measurable increase in their level of independence, even if that increase doesn't make them "normal" or as functional a member of society as the typical person.

I don't know why they call it a gambling problem. Gambling only becomes a problem when you lose. It's more of a losing problem.

True.

The truth is that there are many thousands of people around the world who make a good living exclusively from gambling, and out there you can find tons of modalities. The sad side of gambling is when you don't have any direction and you just do it compulsively and start losing a lot, even your patrimony. On the other hand for example, Those who buy a lotto ticket every weekend and usually spend 10 bucks for those, are gambling as well, but not big deal since it is controlled and surly won't affect their economy at all; I would say that it is like a hobby just like any other, so... the key word again is balance!

"Yet the fact that empirical evidence strongly indicates that the best way of finishing up with a small fortune as a result of gambling is to start with a large fortune is played down."

He's a douche and deserves whatever punishment he has coming, if he doesn't get disciplined for being a bushleague turd, use this to make up for it.
