Yanks took Dante Bichette Jr. with their supp pick. He's listed as a SS, though Oppenheimer considers him a future 3B. The scouting sites, though, see him as an OFer. Regardless, he's got impressive power for a HSer, has a solid big league pedigree and a rocket arm. His price and lack of defined position dropped him a bit, as did his Georgia commit, but Oppenheimer has said emphatically that they will sign him. I like this pick a lot, especially since adding power is a big time priority this yr

You're the first person I've talked to that doesn't think the pick was horrible. Everyone I've talked to thus far is either scratching their head and laughing (Sox fans) or wanting to jump off of a bridge (Yankees fans)

Didn't understand picking him there, rumor was it was a tip to Girardi since him and his dad are best buds. Joe named his kid after Dante sr. He was ranked as the 36th best high school player by BA, but stilll with Dillon Howard on the board I don't understand it.

I agree, I thought that the Yankees were going to take Dillon Howard, especially with the Rays sniping one of the picks that I thought the Yankees were otherwise going to take. The good news is that there is a chance that Howard might still be there when the Yankees pick again, but I wouldn't count on it. I'd be willing to bet that Bichette would still have been there at 88 or whenever the Yankees picked again.

Sam Stafford LHP from U Texas. Capable of throwing 95-96mph from the left side, wild in the zone, needs work on his mechanics. But lots of upside. Good. Good. Like this one a lot.

From BA: "In the high school ranks, righthander Jordan Cote, at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, has a projectable frame that scouts dream about. His fastball sits at 88-90 mph and touches 92, and adding strength and pitching in warmer weather should help bump his velocity, especially because he has great hand speed. His arm action is clean, but his mechanics need to be refined, as he has long levers and is still growing into his body. Inability to repeat his delivery restricts him from throwing a consistent breaking ball. Cote has better feel for his curveball than his slider, though he shows the ability to spin the ball. He hasn't needed to throw his changeup and it's a work in progress. For his size more than his stuff, Cote has drawn comparisons to Chris Carpenter, who grew up about an hour from Cote's high school in New Hampshire. Cote is committed to Coastal Carolina, and though the high school arms from Massachusetts have gotten more attention, one scout said Cote has the highest ceiling of any pitcher in the Northeast."

Matt Duran and Greg Bird are actually pretty similar offensively. Both live off their power, Duran has a bit more in the hit category from what I am reading. While Bird is listed as a C, he sounds like a future 1b or 3b

Through 7 picks' date=' the Yankees have selected one college player, one HS pitcher and 5 HS hitters, [b']4 of which will make their hay with their power[/b]

Maybe they are drafting players suited for Yankee Stadium. ;)

On Cave...

Sounds like a Slade Heathcott comp without the 70 speed. He is a two way player, capable of throwing 93mph from the left side off the mound, but was drafted as a CFer. 60 speed on the scale (above average), a plus defender with a good bat and 20HR potential in the future. Sounds like this is the first truly athletic guy, as the other offensive guys seem to have average speed and are corner IFers or OFers at most.

Wetherell is a college reliever, throws upwards of 95mph. The Yankees LOVE the college relievers of late. Last yr, we drafted and signed 5 of them in Nuding, Burawa, Mullee, Whitley, and Kahnle

BTW, I like the Yankees draft. I may be in the minority, but Bichette looks like a good pick. Frankie Piliere, who actually scouted him, considers his bat to be around a 50 and power around a 70. Meaning he thinks he's a .270 30+ HR guy in the future who has also shown a professional eye. The Yankee system is seriously lacking in the power department aside from a few old prospects and Jesus Montero. They infused a lot of young power potential in last yr's draft, and this yr, they are doing the same. In the next 2-3 yrs, the Yankee power bats will be the next wave.

In terms of the pitching, the Yankees continue to get big, hard throwing college relievers a la last season as well. It's a good philosophy, IMO, and thus far, none of the top 10 picks appear to just be fillers. Now, the unslotted madness begins, lets see who falls.

Had to change the diaper. Baby is sound asleep now...

11th rounder Mark Montgomery RHP Longwood U. Kid throws smoke as well. ANOTHER college reliever. Sits 95mph with a wipeout slider.

12th rounder Cody Grice, no info as of now

13th rounder Justin James, Sacramento CC, LFer

This is around the time teams fill their rosters. My guess is this is not a signability case, but who knows

edit: Actually, sounds like this guy is a work in progress. Didnt even play baseball his senior yr in HS, oldest son of Dion James, and walked onto a powerful JuCo to be one of their better players. Should be an interesting guy, but definitely will need work. He's got 5 tool potential but a low likelihood of reaching it

Just saw a post from Frankie Piliere. Cave is a big time prospect who's signing number was around $1.5 million. He is shocked he fell to the 6th round, but he did predict the Yanks would take him

William "Rookie" Davis, P/1B, Dixon HS, Holly Ridge, N.C.

Yankees 14th rounder

If you like Cron, it is likely you would like Davis. He is 6’5, 230 LBS and reportedly doesn’t shave yet, so there could be more growth on its way. That kind of scares me if it’s true, medically, and for hitters and opposing pitchers. He has huge power from the right side and sticks with the power game on the mound. He throws in the low 90’s and has a very good breaking ball. He could be a work horse on the mound or a big hitting 1B. He’s not a polished player and he has faced inferior talent in high school so he could be a bust but he could be under the radar as well.

He is going to demand a lot to sign
