Sox get Henry Owens at 36, I love the pick. Now we just need Bell at 40 and we're all set for the night. I'd still love to see one of those other HS pitchers, especially one of the righty's, but I'd be happy with Bell at 40 if he's there.

Boston is still a hockey town, home of one of the original 6 teams with a storied history.

Fans have had nothing to cheer about with them since the early 90's. All those fans who maybe lost interest bc of s***** GM's, s***** teams and the strike have returned......and they have spiked the interest of their sons/daughters/casual sports fans. Casual sports fans are more interested in the Bruins right now and many of the pink hats turned their attention away from the RedSox because of last years team.

Henry Owens - You got your wish Ital

It's not Gray or Guerreri, but for one of the first times in all of Red Sox drafts, I'm happy with the first 3 picks. I have a good feeling about the 4th one too.

2 picks to Bell.

Going to be crazy that we will have to pay our 4th pick more than our 1st pick to retain him.

Mother f***er.

Why not gamble with Josh Bell?!?

Because he wants too much money for what he's worth. Lots of other teams passed on him as well.

re: your previous posts counting down to Josh Bell: it is dangerous to get your hopes set on any particular player in a MLB draft. I'm sure you know that.

I would have taken Bell, and if not him, I would have taken another one of those HS pitchers I mentioned earlier, like Norris/Meo/Howard, over Bradley Jr. That said, it's not that bad of a pick, and given our first 3 picks, I'm ok with it. Now I just have to hope for limited damage before we pick again at 81 or something.

At least we had 4 picks in the top 40, and the players we got are all solid players, hopefully their talents can translate. Hopefully Owens can generate a bit more velocity, although from what I understand, scouts don't anticipate that.

The Yankees didn't even have a pick tonight I don't think.

The Yankees picked 51st, and picked Dante Bichette Jr. ;)

In addition, while 60 picks have been taken, by Keith Law's rankings, the #15, #18, #24, #27, #31, #35, #37, #38, #39, #43, #44, #49, #50, and #52 predraft ranked players are still available.

Pick Number Pick BA Rank Keith Law Rank

Matt Barnes 19th 13th 10th

Blake Swihart 26th 17th 19th

Henry Owens 36th 33rd 34th

Jackie Bradley 40th 34th 28th

While no Josh Bell, it seems good enough for me. It looks like Josh Bell is going to slide a long way.

What is the deal with Bell? Im looking him up and he looks like a beast? Is he headed to college or something? Im sorry if its a dumb question Im not familiar with college/highschool prospects at all.

Advised by Boras, firm commitment - I think he's the one that circulated a letter asking teams not to draft him because of his commitment.

Yep, his mom is a professor and really wants him to get his education. He floated a number around 6-7 million I think. I think that he slides for a long time. He was ranked as the #15 overall player by Keith Law going into the draft.

We only got through the first round and the sandwich round. I was really happy with the first 3 Boston picks, and I think the 4th one was ok, but not who I had wanted.

That said, there are a dozen or so top 50 players still remaining, and we're starting with pick 61 tomorrow. The Red Sox next pick is at 81. I think the Red Sox can get a really good pick at 81 as well, especially with the way that some teams have been reaching.

The Sox got 2 pitchers (one HS/one college) (one lefty, one righty) and 2 position players (one HS catcher, one college OF)

In addition, the value of each of the 4 picks was better than where they were drafted, meaning that theoretically, the Red Sox got a better pick than they "should have" based on where they picked. I don't think that they will have trouble signing any of the guys.

As an added bonus, the Yankees only had one pick, and they reached badly with it. They picked at 51 and chose a guy who might have otherwise been chosen in the 100's and was rated as 2nd/3rd round material at best.

In addition, the Rays didn't do that much damage despite having like 10 of the first 60 picks. They made some good picks (stealing Taylor Guerreri from us) but they had a lot of reaches, probably because they didn't want to pay a lot of high signing bonuses.

Any other questions? lol

Do you know much about Jackie Bradley Jr.? I didn't, but then watched a number of videos and did some reading. I definitely question his upside from a tools perspective, but he was the starting cf for a CWS champion team and won the MVP for the CWS in 2010.

There are a number of pretty good videos of him on youtube where he sounds pretty mature and seems to have nice pop in his bat. Looks like a natural leader and he played in a good conference. I have no clue what his future is with the Sox, but I'm more optimistic than I was before watching some of those clips. He's definitely played in the spotlight in a major conference for a few years.

Haven't been as into the draft this season, for obvious reasons, but the sox first two picks were very solid. Barnes has top of the rotation stuff with lots of polish and Swihart gives you a legit catching prospect who actually looks like he can stick as a C
Posted

Regarding Swihart, Theo said that they would have drafted him regardless of his position just purely based on his offensive talents. The fact that he's a catcher made him that much more valuable to them. Hopefully he pans out.

I was looking at some of our old drafts - it's amazing how hit-or-miss these drafts are.

You look at our 2005 draft and we loaded up with Lowrie, Ellsbury, Buchholz all making significant impacts on the team.

Then you look at the 2006 draft, and we had 4 picks in the first/supp rounds, and we get Jason Place (released), Daniel Bard, Kris Johnson (released), and Caleb Clay (8.44 ERA in Portland).

I am really excited about our draft this year. I think Henry Owens is going to be one of those guys who doesn't really pan out, and I anticipate Jackie Bradley being a bit logjammed in the OF. Having said that, hopefully Ranaudo and Barnes can be here in 3-4 years when Beckett and Lackey leave, and when Lester and Buch are both still in their late 20's/early 30's. That would be a really stout big 4 if they pan out as expected.

The more I think about the Bradley pick, the more I like it. First of all, it looks like Bell is going to slide a long way, and barring a huge payout (something only a few teams can provide) I don't see him signing.

Second, even with the injury Bradley was ranked higher than where he was picked. Before the injury Bradley was considered a top/mid first rounder, and we picked up him in the middle of the sandwich round. In addition, I think that Bradley will be a reasonably cheap sign, which may mean that he otherwise wouldn't have made it out of the sandwich round. It also means that we can go for more homeruns today and tomorrow, and with so many top 50 draft picks still remaining, I think we have a good shot of nailing one of them with the 81st pick.

Bradley looks like a value pick and a safe pick (safe relative to signing and relative to making the majors) and considering who our first 3 picks are, I'm content with it. I'd rather have had Bell or one of those pitchers that are still available, but if we get someone decent at 81 then that wouldn't matter. Oh well, only about 2.5 hours until the draft continues. lol
