Well, Tito game-managing at his normal sucky.

Uses up most of the bullpen. Throws Pap in there with a 4-run lead (non-save?).

Pap gets bombed. Closers suck in non-save situations. Well-known by now.

Maybe they give saves for 4-run leads nowadays.

Tito manages to lose another game. But you won't see that in the media.

The players get the blame.

WRONG! STFU until the game is over!

Well' date=' you did call Drew a top 3 worst contract in Red Sox history. :D[/quote']

That was sarcasm. Everyone was ripping Drew and I wanted everyone to see that he isn't the worst signing we have. Try again playboy ;)

Mine was sarcasm too, I knew we would win all along, if you look a few posts later I mentioned Salty was coming up, implying I knew wed win.

We lose this game without Salty.

Wow, crazy game. Wasn't able to see it since I live in NY but I was following the score ticker on ESPN and I thought Carl hit a game winning HR! Boneheaded move by Tito to lift Gonzo. Even though he's slow on the basepaths, his value in his bat is far greater than the speed of a PR IMO. Good thing from this game (besides the win) is that the A's BP will be completly shot tomorrow or will be very limited. The only pitchers for us we likely won't see tomorrow are Alf and Paps (maybe Jenks too). At the end of the day, a win is a win! Go Sox!

Tito managed the game like a brain dead idiot. He boxed himself in with his pinch running moves by surrounding Youk with Sutton and Cameron instead of AGon and Ortiz. If they had stayed in the lineup. the game would have been over innings ago. Pedroia had the bat taken out of his hands twice because Sutton was on deck. Tito needs brain enhancement surgery.

Bard won't be available tomorrow, either. Tito won't pitch him three times in five days. I hope Lackey is well-rested from his time off. At least Oakland burned their bullpen worse than we did.

I'm sure if Lackey doesn't start getting people out, Ace will get it back no matter who's making $18 million.

100% agreed, but we can't hide the horrendous performance of Papelbon; an advantage of 4 runs for a closer who is making MUSD 9.3 and blow it just like this clown just did, unacceptable.

@Drew haters:

Last I checked, Drew gave us some pretty solid seasons, and this season isn't even half way over. People who've been saying Drew's contract is terrible are idiots who don't understand how productive and underrated he was over the past years of that contract. He has earned every penny of his contract. Some of you should really try and introduce yourselves to sabermetrics some time.

Of course, we all know that there's no rational hater out there, so I'm absolutely done right there, just food for thought for some of your people who hate some guy who you don't even know because you don't think he's clutch enough.

I don't hate JD Drew for his contract, I don't think it was one of the worst contracts. From 07-10, he's posted a .853 OPS, which is what we paid for.

Having said that, I think we're seeing the result of a contract that was 1 year too long. He's a bit washed up right now. He's gone from a .275 hitter with a .385-.400 OBP, and now, over the past 184 games, he's a .248 hitter with about a .345 OBP. He's seen a significant drop off, and I am 100% ok with having Reddick take some starts away from him.

I'm definitely on your side. I like sabermetrics and have been a Drew defender. At the same time, his contract includes this year and he needs to produce like a $14m/yr player to justify it. When all is said and done, he won't have been a horrible purchase but I bet the FO would acknowledge that he didn't overproduce like they might have hoped when they brought him in. They won't be disappointed when his contract expires.

The problem with Drew is overall production. That includes the days he doesn't play. He may hit to a high OPS and defend well, but this is a guy averaging a 3.10 WAR per year in Boston, and that number will likely only go down as the year goes on. That's how I feel about Drew. His stats look good, but he just doesn't seem like a valuable member of the team.

Oh. Ok. But you DON'T agree with ME?!?

Youu jerk. :harhar:

Lol, I didn't see you posted, I agree with you too, he's definitely not earning it atm. However, that's not the point I was making, it was specifically targeted against those who complain about how he has a terrible contract. Regardless of how he does this season, he will finish his Red Sox career as a non-disappointment statistically, whether or not people here will notice is up to them, it's just annoying.

I do agree though, he either needs to step it up, or he needs to get benched for a while.

I take it you haven't seen his WAR converted into salary value? Over his stay in Boston, he's earned his contract. He could lose ground this season, but he was definitely not a disappointment.

Scutaro was "worth" 20 million and 10 million in 2009/2010. Those numbers are massive over-estimations.

Except Drew had a proven track record, and his stats back up his value. Also, Scutaro's value is inflated by his position, so that's a pretty crappy example, you know better than that.

They are overestimations of what could reasonably be expected of him in any subsequent season or on the FA market. The values are determined by the cost of each win above replacement that year, no? So in theory he was "worth" that amount those seasons. It doesn't mean that buying him again at that cost is a smart move.

I think with Drew the FO hit the high end of what he would be worth in any of his given years, taking his sitting-out into account. They undoubtedly hoped he would have bruised the green monster a bit more, and they were probably thankful that the rest of the world came around to valuating defense like they did (or else nobody would agree he was worth the cost), but he's roughly worth what they pay him.

Of course, in a world where FOs strive to load their rosters with players who are worth MORE than they are paid, they aren't doing cartwheels over his production. Nor has Theo loved having to defend Drew since the day he was signed. Those are intangable things that must just irritate a GM.
