I'd rather have someone who throws a 84 mph fastball on the corners than a 91 mph fastball dead center. The question is-- can he paint?

Kevin Millwood vs. Mark Prior. BOS/NYY futures match. ;)

Right now, It's Red Sox over Yankees in pitching. Can't believe NY won't add a starter by mid-season.

I laughed out loud when I saw this signing. Living in Philadelphia, I remember when the Phillies fans gave him a ton of crap, even though he was probably, along with Padilla, their most consistent starter. I can't believe that he actually led the AL in ERA in '05.

PITTSBURGH -- According to a major league source, Kevin Millwood, who has been pitching for the Red Sox' Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket, chose not to exercise his opt-out -- which was June 20 -- and will remain in the Sox' organization with the understanding that exploring opportunities in other organizations may be revisited as the season progresses. Any team interested in the righty starter would still have go through the Red Sox in order to inquire about the services of Millwood.

The 36-year-old has pitched extremely well for the PawSox of late, compiling a 3-0 mark with a 2.89 ERA in five starts. Millwood, who joined the Red Sox organization after opting out of his minor-league contract with the Yankees earlier in the season, hasn't surrendered more than two runs in any of his previous four starts. He has struck out 24 and walked seven in his 28 innings of work with Pawtucket.

Millwood right now is probably better than Lackey and Wakefield, but there is what can best be described as "inertia" with respect to underachieving veterans on the Red Sox. They are like that battery bunny.
