I never understood why managers moved every single one of their hitters to the top of the lineup. When you are losing by one going into the ninth' date=' the last thing I want to hear is the bottom of the lineup is due up. With Crawford batting in the 8 hole, there is hope![/quote']

It's like back in the day when we had the AL batting champ bill mueller in the #7 hole, and varitek who was no slouch in his prime hitting #9

Ideally, you want your best hitters to hit consecutively, with no breaks in between for the pitcher to get out of the jam. This way, you maximize the potential for a big inning, which would render the comeback in the 9th obsolete. Naturally, they hit at the top of the order so they get more chances than the inferior hitters.

For deep lineups, like the Sox have, this isn't as big of a concern. However, suppose you had a team with 5 good hitters, and 4 weak ones. You'd be helping the opposing pitcher out if you put 4 at the top and one near the bottom in a silly attempt to protect your 9th inning comeback chances.

Beat 'em often and early, and you don't have to beat 'em late.

I understand that. Francona said all year that their line up is best with Crawford in the top. He said earlier that Crawford will find his way to the top of the order "when it makes sense". So obviously, ultimately Francona wants Crawford in the top of the order ideally. So, what the hell has to happen for Crawford to hit in the top?

Plain and simple, Francona has double standards. If Drew was hitting .360 in the 8 slot, and Craw was hitting .120 in the 6 slot, or if Pedroia was hitting .360 in the 7th or 8th slot after struggling, and Crawford was hitting .135 in the 2 slot, you don't think Francona would make a move?? Especially when our offense has averaged 3.33 runs per game over the past 6 games?? And none of those games involved Felix, Haren, or Weaver.

I'm not implying that Francona should make a temporary move. He needs to make a permanent move. If he plans on putting Crawford in the top of the order, do it already.

I agree, this has gone on way too long.

After two walk off hits and numbers that destroy ones from April, what more does he need to do?

Damn this is one time I actually want to watch a Marlins game. Johnson vs Halladay should be epic.

Agreed. If Lester wasn't on the mound I would be watching that. Might have to find a stream.

Anyone who believes Crawford should remain hitting at the bottom of the lineup deserves a swift kick to the ball bag.

imo of course.

Nobody believes that. Francona will move him up. It's only a matter of time. Not the end of the world imo.
