Curt Young stated the other day that this is his philsophy with the starting pitching this year. We've seen the effects of what happens when a pitcher this year gets to that level. Beckett came out of his last start after only 90-something pitches, and then last night Lester seemed to come out of a gem he was throwing a bit premature.

Is this a new thing with Curt Young? I feel like this wasn't in place with John Farrell. Its supposedly trying to limit our workhorses innings in the beginnign of the season. I'm not sure I agree with it but it is insteresting.

Curt handled the staffs he had out in Oakland pretty well over the years. If it works and saves our guys arms so they can deal gems in September and October when it counts, it's all good. Until then, I'll reserve judgement.

Well, it does mean SOMETHING. I mean if we went 8-4 instead of 2-10 to start the season can be the difference between 92 wins and 98 wins which coudl mean the wild card.

While this is true,

1) you have to have faith that your bullpen can come in and shut the door. Especially in Lester's case last night, he got through 7 IP, and you have to believe that Bard and Pap can come in and shut the door.

And 2) You play for the games in October, not for the games in April. I know that we want to win those games in April, but honestly how many of our losses came from a bullpen blowing up when we would have been better off sending our SP back up there and extending the pitch count? Lester in the 8th and 9th, even at 100-105 pitches, is not the same as Lester in the 3rd and 4th. When we've saved our SP arms and they're effectively going deep into post season games this October, it will be more than worth it.

Our starting pitching was the reason why we started 2-10.

The only reason to exceed 100+ pitches early in the season is for a no-hit bid. The last thing this team needs is an injury to the starting staff.

I wonder, how many pitches , starts and what velocity used to throw a pitcher in the 60's, 70's or earlier decades? I'm not sure that those teams had a 7th, 8th, 9th Inning-Pitcher; the starters usually had to go all the way, right? and how many of those who used to throw 8th or 9th innings had healthy problems? and how long their careers last?

These days, the teams protect a lot the start pitchers.

I'm curious what games you think the Red Sox lost because the starting pitcher was pulled too early?

0. Re-read my 2nd post. It refers to the one above it and has nothing do with my OP. I was just following up with Upper Deck Beck that the games count just as much in April as they do in September.

You make it sound like they are losing games because the starters aren't left out there longer than they have been.

It wouldn't be unusual for starters to go 140-150 pitches at times. I do understand protecting guys that the franchise has millions of dollars invest in, but at the same time for workhorses like Lester strict pitch count is just not a factor at this point in his career.

But I can understand the Beckett thing. He's coming off an injury riddled season and he looks great so far and you just want to mitigate his workload. No doubt he's pumped as anyone else with his early season success.

EDIT NEVERMIND. I misread MJANTOs first post. I though he said April games mean nothing. Not complete games mean nothing.

Kinda looks like your implying that their 2-10 start was a result of this.
