Wouldn't trading for Upton completely rule out the possibility of acquiring Gonzalez through trade?

Possibly. I'm working under the assumption that deal falls through. I'd much rather have AGon than Upton, but we'll see how it plays out.

Now, it is becoming clear what happened. With Werth off the table for a huge payday, the Sox FO decided to go ahead with the trade withno extension for AGon. Their options are dwindling to nill, so they have to roll the dice and go ahead with the deal and hope to extend AGon. I'll enjoy him for 2011, but who knows what happens. Essentially Werth got Holliiday money, which makes the Sox *******s for letting Holliday go by the boards last season. This FO is a bumbling crew.

Who is Holliiday?

Kalish.

That surprised no one did it?

More seriuously, I think RK is in a great position to take the next step next year. He's not that far from effectiveness as it is, if he can get his average into the .275 range and get a couple more over the wall over a full season he could be quite a fine asset for the team

If the issue is next year, the answer may be Reddick. Like Rizzo, he had a crap first half (not helped when we kept jerking him around between AAA and MLB), and then bounced back strong in the second half. He does need at least the one more year of development, but his ceiling's where it always was and he's gaining consistency. If that fails, no real good FA's but you can probably make a trade. Any number of OF's move around in a given trade season, some of them pretty decent, and it's one of the easiest kinds of acquisitions to fit into a team in midseason if Plan A doesn't work out.

Holy s***, you can't even get the positives out of this. :o

I'm stunned.....

I got the positives. I'll be very happy to watch Agon in 2011. I also think that AGon's agent played a room full of Red Sox brass like a fiddle. Good for him. I can appreciate that too. My advice to the FO would be to not underestimate this agent and give into his demands now, because I think AGon's value could go up as he plays in Fenway. If he comes to Fenway and dominates, his agent will make the most of it.

I would have voted for Werth, but he's off the market now, so neither. I don't think Crawford is worth the money. He has a career OPS of just over .700 in Fenway Park, in well over 300 plate appearances, and the Red Sox don't need to pay $20 million a year for someone to do that.

At the same time, though, I don't mind the Sox bidding up the price that the Angels will pay for him.

What is so bad about his post?

I dont think he is all far off what may have happened. The whole Werth thing was happening almost simultaneously

You didn't quote this, which is what i was referring to.

In retrospect, I bet the sox are kicking themselves that they didnt go after Holliday, since he's young and absolutely crushes the ball. But I doubt they are kicking themselves as hard now that they have AdGon.

You didn't quote this' date=' which is what i was referring to.[/quote']I have maintained from the beginning that if Werth got "Holliday" money, that they screwed up by not signing Holliday last year. I stand by that. You and others told me that i was nuts and that Werth was not going to get the number of years and he was not going to break $100 million. Let's just say that you and others were wrong on both counts. I stand by my belief now as I did in 2009 that we should have signed Holliday. Recent events have made me more resolved in my opinion. Those who challenged my belief have nothing on which to hang their hats.

It was a stupid contract, just like Werth's.

I suspect the major parameters of a deal have already been worked out. I'd be very surprised if they haven't.

Holliday had a lot more of a track record to get that kind of deal, and he was younger at the time. I dont think Holliday's contract is too much, but Werth is more injury prone, older, and more inconsistent. He did not deserve such a deal

Until it is announced, we're just guessing. Hopefully, it has been worked out. I'm happily looking forward to seeing him play in 2011.

Now that Werth is off the board, is there any interest at all in signing Beltre and moving Youk to LF? Me personally, I still want Crawford.

I have a feeling, just an inkling, that Crawford is gonna end up in the Bronx. I dont think the Yankees are too keen on extending Swisher, and could get a good haul from him if we sell high. Cashman loves speed and youth, and Crawford fits that to a T. That would also create the fastest OF in the game.

I love Swisher, I love Gardner and Granderson is growing on me like some kind of fungus. I wouldn't want to deal Swisher, I'm not in love with Crawford but I'd just like to see what we could get for Swisher.

That's why I don't rule it out.

I don't want either Youk or Crawford in LF.
