They wouldn't beat 4/50? Man' date=' that's a huge loss[/quote']

I thought they would at least offer what they did for Beltre, 4/52M. Oh well.

According to Ignacio Serrano of El Nacional, who broke the story, Martinez turned down a four-year, $48MM offer from the Orioles and a three-year, $48MM contract from the White Sox

Turning down 3/48 in favor of 4/50, regardless of which Sox team it came from, is stupid. The 3 + whater his next contract offer is would beat 4/50. Must be a "respect" factor in there for being offered a 4th year.

This is my view as well. We will have to wait. Maybe there is an error in the translation.

I'm a little surprised, but I guess it shows they just didn't want him that much. He has good value as a catcher but as a DH/1B his value takes a big hit.

Oh well.

I think something else is in the works. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox made a trade for a catcher. Someone younger and with better defensive skills.

Kurt Suzuki?

Cafardo tweeted the sox offer. He said that the sox offered 3yrs $36 or a 4yr $42 mil deal, which the Tigers beat

In the end it seems Jorge's deal that he signed at age 31 was more of a barometer then the Mauer deal like some had suggested.

All in all that is about what I thought the Sox would be offering. I thought possibly they would go to 4/60M if they felt they really needed him and he could stick at catcher for most of the deal. But it doesn't seem like they where willing to do so.

I'm sure they have their reasons and given their track record with this sort of decision, I'll go with it. Like I said before, it's not jsut the moves they do or don't make right now. I think you have to view it as the moves they make over the next 12 months. Over that time frame the team will be building for their 2012-2018 run.

If we did swing a trade for Suzuki' date=' who would Oakland want? I don't know their exact needs.[/quote']

Suzuki is an interesting option that I know Spud has had a hard on for awhile(;)). Since it looks like their contract talks have stalled with Iwakuma because of his outrageous demands. I would imagine they would be in the market for a 5th SP. Doubront's name comes to mind since it seems like they are willing to deal him. Just the kind of cost controlled upside SP the A's tend to like. I'm sure it will take a couple other add on's as well because Suzuki is signed to a very friendly contract. Also with the A's getting hot and heavy into the Beltre mix and trading for Dejesus, it doesn't appear they are selling off pieces, but adding them.

This is not a team that believes in matching the prices of the most desperate of the other teams to keep their FA's, it's a pattern we've seen for long enough that we shouldn't be surprised at it anymore.

I think we all need to be braced for the FO to have convinced themselves that Saltalamacchia is the wave of the future at catcher for this team. As he's apparently fixed his throwing mechanics and brings some actual offensive upside, I wouldn't be stunned if they used him and a Brian Schneider type to back him up or play a "doesn't quite suck completely" kind of game if it doesn't work.

The Braves will not offer arbitration to first baseman Derrek Lee (A), according to GM Frank Wren via David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Twitter.

This will make him more attractive to Boston IMO.

I could stand D-Lee, but this team better have an alternative in mind if he can't bounce back. I don't think Rizzo's quite ready and Anderson has been disappointing me for years.

Apparently, they saw VMart as a 1B/DH for the last two years of a 4 year deal, and weren't willing to go $12 mil per year--what Papi gets for one year. OK, but who's catching next year? Salty is unproven and may not be durable. Varitek is too old. Esposito is too young. So that means they have to trade for a catcher, which costs them young talent they could use in bigger deals. The GMs job is kind of like fantasy sports. He's even using somebody else's money.

You could say overpaying Papi for one year is better than overpaying VMart for maybe 2 of his 4 years. But is Lackey worth $16.5mil and Vmart not worth $12 mil? Hell no, from what we've seen of Lackey. Free agency is a killer for GMs.

This is infuriating.

Bridge year, here we come. Derek Lee? An old injury prone player at low years and low money? Is this is new calling card of this franchise?

Saltalamacchia.....youve got to be s***ing me. I called this front office cheap all year long and people on this board killed me for it.

If they thought ratings on radio and tv were bad last year.....wait til this year when people stop showing up at the park. This season has PR nightmare written all over it.

2018? By that time, half the season ticket holders will be in retirement homes. A good argument for not hiring young GMs.

Paying Papi $12.5 mil to DH against RHP next year when he's worth about $6mil isn't being cheap. In fact, I wish they had used that money to sign VMart or Beltre.

You want cheap? Try the Patriots.

And what there aren't any fans lined up to replace them? Please. And yes you have to plan for more then just the upcoming season.

The Sox need a 1 year stop gap at 1B. Lee fits that mold. Konerko does too but he's going to want multi years and that doesn't work for the Sox long term plans. Unless he will DH in 2012.

It's not as though they are skipping out on the bill. I believe they have something like 130-140M already committed to next season. Which will put them in the top 5 I'm sure. They are not cheap. They are smart. They have been right about a lot of these typs of deals. Pedro, Lowe, Manny, Bay, Damon. Peopled pissed and moaned for the first year or so those playrs where gone, but soon enough saw what the FO had already seen and started to realize they where right. There view of V-Mart is that he can't stick at Catcher for the duration of his deal and is not worth it, as his production at 1B/DH is less then when he plays catcher. I see no reason to doubt them now.

The Patriots aren't cheap. Their as well run organization as there is in sports. They make smart tough decisions. And hardly are ever on the wrong end of any deal.

A Brian Schneider type does them no good. Salty cannot hit lefties, he has borne that out time and time again. If I were the sox, I would buck up and renew Vtek at $3 mil for 2011 and platoon him and Salty. That would at least get you into the .750OPS range which would be above average in the bigs from the offensive side of things.

Exactly. You want to know who's cheap? Arizona Cardinals. It was like pulling teeth to get them to f***ing pay Fitzgerald in his contract year in 09! Cheap f***ers...<_>
