The starting pitcher is fine. The offense is fine. The only hole is the bullpen. One good bullpen arm would have put them over the top-- not only would they get an extra pitcher early' date=' but they'd also be able to rest Bard and Pap more-- its extremely clear that they have too many miles at this point in the season.[/quote']

I agree with this. They actually needed one of Ramirez, Okijima or Delcarman to pitch up to their potential, and none of them did. those guys are hard to find on short notice and would have cost too much.

If the bullpen were the only concern I imagine Theo would have broken the bank for relievers (as they have done in the past) but combined with all the injuries it was too large a hill to climb in a transition year.

I'm not sure but I think Papelbon has the most blown saves in the league.

That's true. But he also has the 3rd most saves in the league, so his save percentage is a little better than most.

I really think it is time for people to just accept the fact that this might not be the season we all hoped for for the Red Sox.

If that's the case, the question is whether we (as fans) should take any s*** doled out by the self-important Yankee fans who will be here undoubtedly questioning the FO's approach and the effort they percieve was put into making this club winners.

If they don't get to the playoffs but get 90-something wins, I think they will deserve a lot of credit and actually have a really nice setup for next year.

We better sweep the Angels.

After this game we will be 6 back in the division and 5 in the WC. The Sox aren't making the playoffs, it's as simple as that. Short of divine intervention, the season is over.

I'm proud of everything the Sox did. Despite all the injuries we still managed to do pretty damn good. Sure this team needs work(bullpen) but what team doesn't? f*** it we don't make it this year we try harder next year.

It's whatever. It'd be nice to sweep them even if we don't make the playoffs.

I'm not so certain about next year actually. Lets take a look at what we have:

Pitching: Lester, Buchholz, and Lackey make a good trio, but Lackey has fallen short of the "Ace" type money he's getting. Beckett hasn't shown any indication of returning to stellar form, so I don't think you can count on him going into next year. Dice-K is always an uncertainty.

The bullpen needs to be completely redone, the only guaranteed guy to stay is Bard, everyone else needs to go. Papelbon is also a problem, he's been getting worse every year, so do you let him keep the closer role or trade him and give it to Bard?

As for the lineup, If we resign Vmart we still need another catcher to be playing a good amount of games. SS might be a weak link, we will need to resign Beltre or find a new 3B/1B. Cameron will be a huge question mark and might find ourselves looking for a new CF/LF and Ortiz is a big question mark as well.

If Theo doesn't play his cards right, next year might not be the team we were all looking forward too.

The starting pitching is fine. Lester and Buch are #1 and #5 in ERA in the AL, so they're going to be one of the best 1-2 punches out there as they approach their prime years. Between Lackey, Dice-k, Beckett, one will have a great year, one will be average and one will suck-- that's what we need to expect from now on. But even with one underperforming, its still a great rotation, and on any given week, three pitchers will be lights out.

The positions this team needs to replace with big bats are C, 1B, COF, and DH. VMart will cost a bit to resign, but besides that the others are fairly cheap fixes, especially with the 50-60 million that this team is shedding. This team needs one more elite setup guy, but I think that will put them over the top. Some of this solutions may come from within. The core of this team is too good for it to fail with the money available for them to spend.

Thats pretty much exactly what I said. The team has a good core, but Theo could easily bring in the wrong pieces if he goes cheap. If they spend the money, they can put together a good team.

Cliff Lee isn't a young free agent, I just think it won't be the slam-dunk/bonanza free agency sign for whichever team gets him. But hey, it beats being the g.m. that inked Josh Beckett to a new contract.

Disagree. The hill really wouldn't be steeper. I love the front two of Lester-Buchholz. The Yankees also have a good deal of age. But no matter what, the AL East is tough. At the end of the day, this is a Red Sox team that might have been leading their division if not for a shitload of injuries.
